FO role : JQ vs Virgin vs Alliance

As GA battler in Australia, now looking into Airlines, who would you rather work for as a new FO in the current climate ?
Jetstar, Virgin or Alliance ?
I have interviews with all 3, not sure which one I should choose if I pass all 3.
Any insights would be great.

You can only answer the question yourself.

Who do you want to work for?

You might get lucky and only get 1 yes. Decision made.

The new uniforms at JQ will be the deal breaker. Might be worth checking each operator's EBA and see which one works for you.

From the outside looking in, Id give the QF group (ala JQ) a hard avoid.
VA probably, maybe even Alliance for the short-meduim term give thier progression and basings.

Pick whats important to you, ultimately its a case of choosing the best of bad bunch I suspect.

I'd tell my younger self to just get to the USA asap. Despite the naysayers, the pros outweigh the cons.

Personally I’d choose the one less likely to result in redundancy over the next two decades. Which one that is is a matter of opinion.

I have a few mates at QQ and what they have said is - recent times has seen Alliance pushing for a no D*head policy with a focus on a postive culture. They’re big on training and small on checking.
Nothing negative to say. A lot of come from the big leagues but reckon Alliance is where they’ll stay for a while

Interesting, I know a few returning from ME3 carriers and a few have been captains 2 decades or more and still been failed commands at Alliance, interesting you say there is a training culture as a number of them would disagree. The trouble recruiting and retaining crew at all 3 you are considering shows the contempt their respective agreements show towards crew renumeration so choose the best of the second tier employers, which one is the best, only you can decide.

lol. Nice try QQ recruitment - struggling to find pilots are we? And no D’head policy - some of them might need to take a very hard look in the mirror.

The only companies to avoid would be Network and NJS. The pay at these companies has fallen far below the others. As a guide once the new Virgin agreement gets up you’ll be $50,000 better off as an FO every year with Virgin.

If you want to get into Mainline avoid QF Group companies, they will not release you.

If you want a quick command then Jetstar or Alliance would be the pick particularly if you’re happy to go to any base.

If you want a good selection of cities and towns to live in the Alliance is the pick. They took over all of NJS’s good bases (CNS, DRW). Not enough days off and most likely to experience base closures though.

Dont let staff travel dictate your decision. It sucks at all Australian companies particularly if you are trying to travel as a family.

Alliance has to be the go out of those options. A fleet of 75 and another 25 plus on order.
Their route network is now much more diverse than qantas’ 73 and the legs provide greater density.
its all well and good until Qantas decide to take a position in another carrier and undercut what’s established. It’s the way they roll.

8 days off a month
combined with
fleet of 75 and another 25 plus on order.
could be a recipe for some very tough years ahead as far as fatigue and lifestyle goes. I’ve been at a carrier that was expanding before and although it looked ok on paper to the execs, we were doing 90hrs stick a month and swapping from earlies to lates and back again multiple times a month which really impacted my positive outlook on life after a year or two. Worth considering if you have a young family.

It would entirely depend on your goals, priorities, ambitions. A case could be made for any of the 3 depending on your circumstances, career aspirations, where you want to live, what you want to do with your career etc. So you’ll need to post more information if you want posters here to help tbh.

Exactly what Dre said. But I would look at what each EBA says, take the BASE salary, and apply it to your circumstances. Don’t go off what “my mate reckons he did 95hrs of overtime and 27 trips last roster” is thrown around, because it’s often highly inflated and unrealistic for the majority of the time. Pilots are often the worst ones to ask “what do you earn?”.

The base salary is a guarantee though, to a point. But if you live to that, then the times when you do get 140hrs overtime and 35 trips, it’s money for the piggy bank.

The industry is better off if you avoid Alliance. The more the QLinks struggle, the better.
