In my first week as an expat I was given some pretty good advice by an old china hand who proposed 2 basic rules.

Rule 1. Leave with the same woman you came with. ( It was the 1980's you understand )

Rule 2. Buy 2 very large buckets, one for money, the other for the ****e that will come your way.. When one bucket or the other is full, go home

Well I broke rule 1 early on so only one bucket got full, no prizes for guessing which one. And sadly home was a real disappointment. Some very big sacrifices made on the way too, like I did not ever again live in the same house with my kids after the eldest was 13 yo, both now close to 50. Was it worth it, absolutely apart from the kids thing.

Can I suggest when coming back you don't burn too many bridges so you can leave again. You may want to.
