In reference to the ABC news link (post #21)

A lot of hype and political infighting; questions about capability, projected performance etc etc

The proof of the Triton's ability or lack of ability will be demonstrated by the next arrival of refugees in wooden boats anywhere along the coastline. The best 'tool' in the tool box for coastal surveillance is the Mk1 eyeball. If Coastwatch Dash 8's need an upgrade or refurbish then do so and perhaps increase the budget and acquire a few additional aircraft.

The Coastwatch aircraft in Cairns are all looking very shabby, they really do need a new paint job.!

They were talking about drones in the contract renewal talks around the mid 2000s. The capability has come a long way.
