Lithium ion battery 18650 in GA
Hi there,
I'm making an ADS-B receiver using a Raspberry Pi. I'm considering powering it with Lithium Ion 18650 Batteries as they have a pretty good capacity and I have a few lying around. I'll be 3D printing the enclosure for it so I can design it to accept any type of battery really... I figured seeing as the 18650's are usually used in laptop batteries and most power banks it won't be too much of a problem anyway. Has anyone had experience using 18650 batteries in the cockpit? I've seen a few CASA articles about storing them for flight but nothing about actually using them to power devices in the aircraft.
Ideally I'll get some that have under/over charge and temperature protection.
Any wisdom would be much appreciated!

Noodle,
Be aware that the capacity of most 18650 batteries (ie: including all the ones I have/have come across) is only a fraction of the manufacturer's claimed capacity.
You will be better off with multiple AA ganged together, Panasonic made seem to be closest to their manufacturer's claims
Google to confirm.
Tootle pip!!

I have a RPi ADSB receiver using the Stratux distro. I power it with either this or this. They both last for ever and have power management gubbins so they don't overheat, short or do other stupid things on charge or discharge. The Darq Matter one I think does pass through as well - so you can have it on power at the same time as using the battery.
