Does CASA mandatory ADSB mean owners can't afford TAWS?

In about 15 month’s time every aircraft that flies IFR will have to have ADSB fitted. Of course the best way of reducing accidents for these aircraft is to be fitted with a Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS) however, presumably with the money being spent on ADSB there’s less chance of TAWS being fitted. It looks as if there is something really lacking in CASA as to where the risk really is for small aircraft primarily flying OCTA under the instrument flight rule.

The requirement for TAWS isn't law yet.

That said, if you are upgrading your GPS for ADS-B you will probably be close to having a TAWS capable GPS anyway.

...and if your steam-driven transponder can pass the new standards for Transponder calibration, good luck to you. Most people will be replacing their old transponders regardless.

....We installed that stuff in our fleet during the mining boom but I wouldn't want to be thinking about it now

Quick google showed Bendix with a TSO-C151B certified TAWS for about 13 large plus freight and fitment....even had a special running till Christmas last year making it 4 grand cheaper...

Admit I never thought certified gear was down to that price point.

Interesting!
