Compressor washes

As a C208 pilot that operates within 10nm of the sea, CASA have advised the company that compressor washes (squirting of water into the engine) must be conducted daily and a compressor turbine wash (removal of injectors etc and injecting water into the engine) must be conducted weekly.

Can anyone point me to the applicable reg that allows a pilot to conduct the compressor Wash? Does this compressor wash then entitle a pilot to a payment and if so where is it in the award?

It is my understanding that the compressor turbine wash can only be conducted by a LAME as it requires removal of engine components and specialist tooling etc. I have seen that some Caravan operators in WA and the NT allow their pilots to do both. Can anyone tell me what is required to attain the permission and does that then generate you the engineering allowance Mentioned In The Award?

Don't know the reg but I got pilot approval to do them on the KingAir I was flying. Think by memory we did them about once a month can't remember the hours. In the process had to remove an igniter plug pretty straight forward and we got paid extra as well.

Where I worked it involved a maintenance authority to conduct them, as you're right, it involves removal of engine components and specialist tooling. Definitely not covered under schedule 8.
It does constitute an allowance under the award. AD/PT6A/28 is the document you're after.

With regards to extra pay, I think that's a fair question if the pilot is paid only on a per-flying-hour basis. If you're on a salary, I'd say it's fair to assume that it'd be part of your duties.

It requires a maintenance authority to carry out the actions of a LAME. You're definitely entitled to be paid more for it.

If you're flying caravans professionally you won't be arguing about another half an hour to do a compressor wash.

There are two parts to this type of operation. A compressor wash can be done by the pilot without any kind of approval as no tooling is involved.

A turbine wash requires the removal of an igniter (don't drop it!) and that needs tools, hence the requirement for a maintenance approval which is granted to the pilot by CASA after relevant training by the company's engineer.

The turbine wash is only required for a CAR206 operation (pax charter).

Hot tips; Park it into the wind with the bypass closed (cools faster), don't put the water in until 15 minutes after you can put your hand on the turbine section (new engines cost a lot) and the drying run doesn't count as a start cycle for PT6A's (Alison/RR's do).

I have approval on the caravan, had to be trained by a LAME, paper work off to casa, and then for a fee they grant me an instrument so I can conduct them (for the machine operating on the company AOC).

Also, when you are going to do a wash, be sure you have enough time afterwards to let it dry out!! I've seen a few Pilots a little embarrassed having to lead their pax back into the terminal when the darned thing won't start!!
