Looking at Google Earth, there seems to be plenty of open space west of the airfield for a 16/34 parallel runway. Is it too costly to purchase the land beside the airfield to build a parallel runway?
As a kid a couple of decades ago I can remember the Melways (UBD or Gregory's for others) showing the proposed 16R/34L. They're building a flash new tower there, so obviously a parallel runway is not in the short term planning...

Sorry, showing my age

LAHSO (and ETOPS and probably many other things) I think show the shift in focus from what are the consequences of something going wrong? to what are the chances of something going wrong? Risk assessment and management rather than just risk avoidance.

Its no consolation, but any controller in Australia will be able to tell you about something much more risky than LAHSO, that is done every day. If you want a fright search these forums for short break procedure, single person night shifts, staffing levels, fatigue management, Class E, non-continuious towers, single engine IFR, ATC refresher training etc.

I have a vague recollection of some bright spark suggesting that SY could use parallel ops AND LAHSO to get 3 arrivals at once

Edited to add: 2007 Melway shows proposed 16R/34L AND 09R/27L!

The new tower is within the existing AsA compound (just east of McNabs Road) & is near enough to midway between the current & proposed RWYs.

Now for my personal opinion ()

I agree with Airsupport on this one, there's something that gets the kanackers tingling when you deliberately point two aircraft at each other, especially low and slow.

I don't know whether LAHSO is done in too many other places around the world?

Chief's comments brought the memories of SIMOPS back there were some serious movement rates going on then!

I make sure my pax know about it before we fly it. After having been accused of a 'near miss' a bunch of years back by pax who felt we were 'hiding something' from them with similar circumstances I'm not completely up front about it.

Luckily (for me) I don't tack on my personal feelings about it- particularly when I've just held for 20 minutes to accommodate the SODPROPS. Nothing frustrates me more than holding and using a single runway when there are two available but due to 'noise sharing' we can't. So much for the Labor Government caring about the environment.
