Up to 2100 tonight (CST) there were still choppers looking for an aircraft that a member of the public advised, they had seen crash into the ground.

Hope no-one I know!

This time of night means it is going to be at least a piston twin in size.

Might take a quick drive and see if I can see anything!

if it is the case the last aircraft I saw depart, and it was pretty marginal wx, definatly not VFR was a chieftain, not saying which company to aviod the rumour mill starting.

as a side note, wouldn't the tower be able to tell where it went down?

Word is that Darwin Airtraffic services are un aware of an aircraft down and the search is based on more than one eye witness reports. The careflight chopper has been sent out to resume search at approxamitely 0630(CST) just after first light. This leads to some speculation

- the weather last night would have been IFR weather, being at night and instrument approach procedures in place.
- one eye witness report says it was a five seat aircraft (non aviation folk could easily be a titan in there eyes, or a C150)
- Airtraffic were unaware of any aircraft uncounted for under there control.
-the location of the downed plane was well inside the Darwin CTA most probably under the 500ft step.

this leads to a few conclusions.........
first and hopefull conclusion is that there was no aircraft down at this time.
the second conclussion is that someone, fearless enough has taken off from outside the darwin airport control and has attempted to transit below the darwin 1000/500ft step (transponder off) in marginal weather....... i hope its the first.

Julia Christensen, on the ABC Morning (radio) program interviewed some one, I think from Care Flight. The precis is, that about 1800 local, several witnesses reported seeing an aircraft descend into the mangroves.

The Care Flight (?) chap said that the official consensus was that optical illusions caused by setting sun, cloud cover, and traffic lighting led to the reports, which though erroneous were nevertheless well received.

Just before 2100, the weather good enough to see the RWY from HWS.

Perhaps a trike mucking around below the steps and decided to have a close look at the croc at the mangroves and then land on a beach where his car was parked.,., folded it all up on a trailer and went home for a well deserved ale after a fun day !

Smoothie....
