Warrior Down in Melbourne
Poor Royal Vic, another one down.
A STUDENT pilot and his instructor are lucky to be alive after their light plane crash landed in a Langwarrin quarry just after 2pm.The Piper Warrior was being flown with a male student aboard when the engine failed, the Frankston Standard Leader reports.

The plane is understood to have been on a training flight from French Island and was on its way to Moorabbin Airport when it was forced to ditch next to a quarry pit.
The plane crash landed near the junction of Lexton Drive and Quarry Rd shortly after 2.20pm.
There were no reports of any injuries.

Just heard it on the news as well. A quarry landing, that would have been fun. Judging from those photos they followed procedure and did a good job. Congrats to the pilot and all on board TRV!
GREAT LANDING considering the landscape!! And pot holes i bet as to why the wheels sheared off! It would take a lot to shear Piper legs off as they candle handle almost anything!
Graet to see everyone standing there no injuries just pride hurt - or maybe sense of relief they did so well to put it in tight area. I know around there - not many level open patches at all!
Great job guys - Instructor did well - i know him.

Only logged 0.8 in TRV, but she was a sweet plane. Kudos to all involved. Let's wait to hear from the Moorabbin Airport Residents' Association about this.
Two incidents in a few months - they are going to have a field day................Lord give me strength.

They were damn lucky to have ended up there. I notice the sheer edge ahead of them. If they had come in with a tiny bit more speed it would have been like hitting a brick wall.

If I had to take an engine failure in anything, it would be a B52 or 747.
One went in yesterday in NT too taking out two of our fellow aviators.

It was a Vans RV7.

As an RVAC long time member I can say I have never had an issue with a plane I have hired in the almost 6 years I have been with them. The instructors are mostly top notch (with one or two notable exceptions in the past which won't be mentioned).
I can't see myself flying with anyone else.
I flew TRV about a month or so ago, nice plane. Hope that it is repairable.

I'd be holding my head like that too if that was in fact the second plane I had broken.
Looks like there was little or no power behind that prop when she hit the ground. I like the way the wheels are placed neatly beside the aircraft. Looks like the legs just sheared off. Just goes to show no matter how many gold bars on your shoulder, things still go wrong.
I'd like to see a photo from further out. It looks like there's a steep embankment behind them, surely it didn't just belly flop there in a stall I wonder and there's no skidding marks visible apart from those in the passengers jocks.

Wow, not much praise on here for what is obviously a VERY nice piece of flying. (Compared to other threads that go 3 pages in 2 hours)
We can wait for the report to see if it was pilot induced, but for now i'm gonna back him and congratulate a great job done by the PIC.
VH-XXX, i wouldn't call that a 'broken aeroplane' i'd call it a SAVED one! Things could have gone a a lot worse!
Why is it mandatory upon gaining a pilot's licence we feel the need to constantly bag each other? It's the reason i don't hang around airports for anymore than i need to these days. 80% of pilots seem to have small d1ck syndrome - Knocking others to make themselves feel better - Usually followed up by a cocked up bit of flying themselves!!!
So from me, a BIG to the pilot, you walked away - Bloody good job done!!!!

To refit the buttons on the squab ACMS.
I can't see where they went wrong...they walked away from it thus it was a good landing!

I was not bagging the pilot. The suggestion was made that it was his second aircraft broken. I don't take much notice of the 2 post PPruners on here anyway so get bent
Thanks John for that pic, it makes things much clearer about where they put down and makes you wonder why the aircraft is broken at all as there's some half decent terrain behind them. If it was a SuperCub it would have got away with that landing no dramas.
This particular aircraft obviously wasn't fitted with the "Drop Wings" button that we were all led to believe that Warriors have after the last crash.
