OZ ATPL flt test?

Just when I thought I was all done with flying schools, apart from
renewals, I hear rumours CASA is going introduce a flight test on top of the subjects for ATPL?

It's been on the drawing board for years now, along with a raft of other licensing changes. Australia is the only country I know of that doesn't require a flight test for initial issue of an ATPL, so it would just bring us into line with everyone else.

There are other, more palatable, changes in the same proposal e.g. All flight crew quals to remain valid permanently, subject to ongoing competency checks - which would do away with the annual renewal of CIRs and bi-annual renewal of Instructor Ratings. I'll party on that day !!!!

Originally was supposed to be implememented in mid-2005, but no idea what the current target is.

Maybe they'll get around to that when they get around to getting rid of the B727; circa 1995 I think so it's just around the corner.

Seriously, why require a flight test?

Thanks for the link Unhinged.

I just read:

Aircraft endorsement system for pilots to be simplified through adoption of ICAO system of aircraft type and class ratings:
  • ...
  • Multitude of endorsements currently required for single pilot aeroplanes to be replaced by four (possibly six) class ratings
Does this mean that there'd be no official endo/rating for moving from, say, a C310 to a Baron or other similar aircraft? Wow, that's common-sense. (And before the safety-high-ground hounds are released I would argue that the system works well in other places by simply putting the onus on the owner/operator/insurer allowing more flexibility through less red tape).

Cool... but I must get to finishing off those ATPLs and getting those night hours before the flight test ($$$) comes in.

Interesting reading..."All training and checking pilots to also hold an instructor rating." Have held training positions previously...how will that work for existing pilots who do not hold an instructors rating yet hold training positions??

Over here I think we've had an ATPL flight test from day one.
Although many of out pilots go to australia under the TTMRA and get their ATPL's.
Clever buggers.

In NZ you have to to an endo if you go from a C152 to a C172 or any other single/twin for that matter.

I am pretty sure that even if you have a C210 endo, and you would like to go and fly a 206 you have to do a type rating.

Except JAA land, where there is no ATPL flight test and never has been. Unless there has been some recent change, there are a whole raft of countries that don't require an ATPL flight test.

Oz look like they are going backwards to me, soon they will be back in the same backwater as the NZ CAA!

More money to the flying schools!

I mean though seriously how could you sit a flight test in a light aircraft to emulate an ATPL?

I would doubt the flying schools would have anything to do with it. I guess they would have to be done in an aircraft above 5700kg like NZ ?

JAA ATPL test

Remoak, not true. In JAA land there is an ATPL test, although it can be completed in a sim. In fact it is most likely to be in a sim as in JAA land you can only have an ATPL with a type rating on a multi crew aircraft (oh and the small matter of 500 hours of multi crew experience). Here's hoping it doesnt go that way in oz.

In other words, an LPC. There is no requirement under JAR for a stand-alone ATPL skills test - you automatically fulfil the requirement when you first put a heavy type on your licence. Most new F/Os will just have to wait until they have the required hours and then send the form off and get a shiny new ATPL via return mail.

Yeah mate, your pretty much righto on... Its just some paperwork and then do a flight test in Sim, but its during ya company renewal anyway... really not much of an additional flight test.
