....and if they do a big flypast, the RAAF will have to email, phone and write to every single resident of Brisbane to ensure they know that the event is on and it's not some kind of 9/11 thing.....

If 2010 is planned withdraw then next year 2009 may be the last year with the Pig at Riverfire as with the 707 it will happen at June ie end of fin year.
Hope I'm proved wrong but a warning you may need to find the perfect spot very soon!
Long live the pig!

I wouldn't be surprised it there is a bit of a delay in the withdrawing of the Pig as, i'll bet my left testicle on this (it's not being used anyway), the introduction of the F/A-18F's will have some sort of delay and then a changeover period as they come into service. As we wont have a full squadron of them delivered all at once, there will probably be a period whgere both aircraft are operating at the same time.

They should keep a couple operational just for airshows, and keep the rest for parts.
Its the best way the taxpayer has of getting some return on our investment!

PR-111
Jabawocky, you will not be suprised from your comments to learn that we routinely referred to the Pig at Amberley as the PR-111! Sometimes on the Squadron it felt that the only important thing on the flying program was the next flypast/dump & burn.
The actual D&B maneouvre itself was discovered accidentally. A USAF F-111 lost an engine and was dumping fuel to reduce weight while having the operating engine in AB to maintain airspeed. The Tower reported the impressive flame out the back - not sure whether the crew ejected or not but that was the first D&B.
They didn't perform the D&B in the USAF, and all the exchange crew from the USAF who flew in the RAAF thought we were crazy for doing so, though they loved it and were always keen to be able to fly one.

I heard a story that the rear end of one of our jets caught fire during a D&B once. Anyone care to shed some light/dispell said story??

Was working that night in brisbane centre, 2 f111's were used. Both hold down south waiting for the run. One did the first run then went back to hold with the 2nd until the second did his run. First one hung around till the 2nd had commenced its run in case he was needed due to any technical faults. First one was on its way back to amberly as the second was on its approach.
