Don't be fooled
Actually Jab, the engines are SO good they've concluded that they only need the one, and, since the stinger's got to be on the nose (no pun please!) they decided to rip the other one out to save weight.
Seriously though, when you consider the hours that the survey aircraft fly, and their environment, you have to conclude that the safety stats are pretty good.
Cheers...Z

Maybe they are reliable.......... but a TBO of 300 on the gearbox is weird! I assume that is still the case or has the fountain of all knowlege PPRuNe let me down!

Sorry Jab, it was my weak attempt at humour. ![Evil](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/evil.gif)
No, as far as I know, they're still at 300 hours but it was meant to be pending an extension provided by the operational stats.
Alas, it would appear that the operational stats are dictating that they may not even make it to 300 hours.![Boo Hoo](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/boohoo.gif)
There really does need to be something done about these 'cause it's letting the concept down rather badly.
If you ever get to fly one of the DA42's with the diesel, you'd be a convert to what they can promise. (Notice I said promise, not, deliver in the long term).
At the end of the day, the obstacles WILL be overcome because the benefits are just too tantalizing to dump into the "too hard" basket.
As one of my posts yesterday suggests, there are 24 serious expressions of interest in taking over Thielert. This does suggest at least that there is justification for the technology.
Now a diesel in the Jab 430 would be awesome.
(and expensive) ![Frown](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/sowee.gif)
Coming back to Fugro though, I have to say that theirs was a courageous move to embrace new technology and try to get out of the rut of bashing around in the same old tin cans.
Unfortunately, it would appear that the tin cans are going to be around for a while longer. Worse still, they will probably still have 50+ year old technology engines in them.
I hope that Murray is able to report each month that "ALL" the survey operators have landed safely.
