Bourke NSW fuel

Be careful if planning to operate through Bourke in the next few days. Shell and their agent are having a dispute with no staff currently in place. At least two aircraft caught there over the past few days.

Air No Services won't issue a notam.

Question YBKE fuel

What's wrong with the Carnet Cards or is there no fuel in the ground?

We have been told no JET A1 for sometime, which is meant to be available from a recently installed bowser...

So I would assume there is 'no fuel in the ground'!

Bourke fuel

the fuel in the ground is quarantined. Fuel in the truck is OK, just no staff to unlock the Jet truck and pump.

If they'd rang ahead they most likely wouldn't have got caught. It always amazes me when people rock up in a remote location unannounced & expect fuel to be available.

Air No Services won't issue a notam.
Why should they? It's the pilot's responsibility to ring ahead & check on the availability of fuel, & leave a contact number should it become unavailable.

To my way of thinking, NOTAM's are there to ensure the timely, accurate dissemination of operationally significant information, whether it be of a transient (temporary) nature or longer-term. Fuel availability or lack thereof is certainly one of those things that I would consider to be 'operationally significant'.

Looking at the ERSA entry for Bourke (YBKE) I see under Handling Services and Facilities that fuel is indeed available H24, with no published requirement to 'call ahead and check availability'. Given that (I believe) the ERSA and NOTAM's are published from the same office (or at least organisation), I'm definitely of the opinion that a NOTAM would be appropriate to correct their own published information, when they are aware that the published information is incorrect -even if only temporarily.

I tend to agree with the above that a NOTAM would be suitable, especially for those not familiar with the area.
I was at Bourke in March and discussed how there were difficulties between Shell and the local fuel co. and call out time etc.

Probably advisable at remote locations, but a responsibility...!

This is what notams are for.

I rang ahead on Tues 29/7 (both mobile numbers went to voice mail) and left messages seeking confirmation that AVgas was there. No response.

Flew in Wed 30/7 and got Avgas from the bowser using Shell carnet card.

Been down this road on a couple of occasions with the NOTAM office. The only time they will issue a NOTAM regarding fuel is if it is a permanent change to an ERSA listing, ie "AVGAS / JET A-1 NOT AVBL". For temporary supply disruptions, we are on our own.

I certainly don't support the line ASA are taking with this as it puts the responsibility onto the fuel supplier / airport operator to do a ring around of all the regular users to let them know if there is a problem. I don't have a problem doing that but there is no way we can get the word out to an itinerant who might be just flying through.
A simple one line NOTAM would be far easier for everyone concerned.
