Finally., something from a mainstream producer which is more reasonably priced than comparable Garmin offerings.

Yes. Will be interesting to see how long it takes to expand the databases. It has an expandable SD slot as well so this may aid in the upload of databases.

Of cause the problem with these things is that they have weather but require MX satellite something we dont have here Australia.. I was thinking of producing a device some time last year that worked in Australia with the Garmin Panel mount GPS's but after a D & G Discussion it was poo hoo'ed as nobody thought paying for weather on the screen was of any use. I think it's the main use it's the think that separates it from every other GPS on the market.

Matt.

I agree Matt. I used an IPhone with internet a couple of years back, on a flight. I found it invaluable to determine rain pattern via the BOM radar. I was able to fly around and between showers. The only drawback was the delay in images and not real time.

Matt:
If you don't mind me asking, were you planning to display the BOM radar data on the Garmin or some other information? The radar coverage is not that great...

The Bendix seems cool, at $750 it beats the Garmin. Garmin have been overcharging the world for years.

Same format as my car's Bitching Betty.

Hey Matt, your idea is still a good one. What we do need is the BoM to put a metrad around Cobar to fill in the blank between Mildura and Moree. That would give good east coast coverage from ML inland up to BN as well as through to FNQ. Then your device hooked up thru the net would work a treat. Already have it with pocketFMS so it mustn't be too hard to interface.

As for the bendix? Good move and with current exchange rates, affordable here in Oz! roll on oceania database

Cool We have the technology!

Thinking about it, what they should do is have weather radar transceivers in regional, domestic and international aircraft. They could create the weather model while airborne and re-transmit to devices such as the Bendix.

I think it would be good to use the ebooks section to have all your checklists and POH reference material.

The Idea was to purchases the live radar feed as well as TAF/METAR from the BOM and then on sell it via other means to an airborne receiver and then convert to AIRNIC 429 for GNS430/530 G1000 & the like but RS232 could also be possible for other hand held units. The Feed would also include lighting strike information. But revenue from such a project would be from two things sail of the airborne hardware and ongoing fees for connection to the service. From my research the Australian Market would not be able to take the costs of the unit given the R&D and Certification of the network and airborne units.

People would like to pay around $30 - $40 a month for the service and < $5000 for the airborne unit. and the reality would be about $12000 for the Airborne unit and $100 a month for the service.

I do like the idea of other aircraft sending info from there on board radar however im not sure it would be of much use to the rest of us as i think the beam is narrow in front of the aircraft and as all the aircraft libel to have the transmitters (ie RPT) will be on the same routes the coverage would not be that great for the little guys that would only have receivers. Im not sure but there may be enough bandwidth in the ADSB data burst to put this information It's simple vectors where are highly compressible (Dick are you listening ? perhaps you can answer)

If you need airborne TAF/METAR the easiest way is a Next G mobile go on your web browser to VMC-TRACKER MOBILE and type in the ICAO id for the airport. This can work around most towns in the J curve when on decent. It's handy for getting the wind and QNH so you can plan a straight in approach. Warning Coverage is patchy. It may interest you that i just upgraded my Crap (and dont buy one) Globalstar phone to an Iridium phone. It has SMS messaging where the old globalstar did not and in theory can send and receive SMS anywhere on the planet. Im going to write something where you can sms an airport ICAO id to a number and it will SMS you back the latest TAF/METAR This will give Australia wide airborne access to TAF/METAR my plan will be simply to charge per message so should be within the reach of the tightest ass.

Will let you know.

Funnily enough you don't see a lot of Garmin used on aircraft above 5700 kg!

It might be the PPL's GPS of choice....

Devil Feed Portals

How about buying some TV Network bandwidth and transmit the feed through their satellites. i.e. Approach channel 7 and get channel Nine to fund it.
