What's the correct phaseology for VFR diversions?
Hi.
I don't recall the last time I had to make a diversion. I can't seem to locate the correct phraseology anywhere in the AIP regarding diversions. Can somebody please advise me of the exact phraseology given the scenario below, or point me in the right direction.
VFR flight in VH-ABC. Flight Planned Route is YSBK-YHOX-CRL-GLB-2RN-YSBK. If I'm 20nm inbound CRL at 6500', and the instructor asks me to divert now to GLB at 5500' for a few circuits, then on to 2RN-YSBK as per flt pln. Assuming I have now worked out my new HDG, ETI to GLB and will divert from a point 20nm from CRL to GLB. What's the correct radio call?
The only info I can find on this subject is limited to : Call "Sydney Flightwatch, ABC with sartime flight plan ammendment".
I appreciate your help.

Back in the olden days when Flight Service existed, it used to be something like;
ABC: "Melbourne, ABC with flight plan amendment, standby for details"
Melbourne FS: "ABC go ahead with details"
ABC: "ABC diverting to XXX, YYY then flight plan route. Estimating XXX at ....., YYY at ...."
But that was a long ..long time ago. I think these days, no one cares about all this. Just be sure that you call Censar before your SARTIME expires.

The way it was taught to me was a simple "Position, Altitude, Intentions".
Eg. "ABC is 20nm's east/north/south/west of CRL, 6,500, now tracking direct to GLB at 5,500ft, then as per flight planned route"
Very easy, .

ABC: "Syd(/Mel/Bris) Centre Flightwatch, ABC, flight plan amendment."
ATC: "ABC, Flightwatch, go ahead (or rack off we're busy)".
ABC: "ABC is 20nm's n/e/w/s of CRL, 6,500, now tracking direct to GLB at 5,500ft, then as per flight planned route, changed Sartime YSBK hh:mm."
There's a lovely little cheat sheet going around that has all the different frequencies you should be trying to get someone to tell your details to. In Melbourne I use 135.7 if they're not busy, someone else if they are. The next series of maps (June->) will have the approporiate freq's on them but at the moment it's all over the place.

Ring 'MUM' on your mobile.......
At least SHE will care.....and maybe even write it down.......

p.s. Don't forget to CANCEL SARTIME

i have honestly never notified flightwatch of a diversion UNLESS i'll not be ending up at my final destination, eg YPDN - YCOO - YPTN but divert due wx from YCOO - YJAB for the night, then i'll call Flightwatch. If i'm gonna end up at my prescribed destination then only a SARWATCH cancel for me

The only thing I would add to what FLOG said is " ML Centre ABC VFR flight plan amendment " so that they can differentiate between you and an aircraft on an IFR plan and then the tape records your details in case someone has to come looking for you later.

Fair enough, Aussie Nick, but if you're diverting miles away from your previously planned track without telling anyone (assuming you want sar services) you'll be relying more on your epirb to be found.
As far as diversions go, it's pretty much the 'flight plan amendment' heads up, then I'd use:
Diverting from where to where, what height, and for IFR, time interval and what time I'll be at the diversion start point.
Considerations: Track, heading, planned altitude, Fuel, terrain, LSALT, airspace, frequencies, traffic, last light.

Many years ago I was taught to remember it like this...
- Who you are (call sign, type)
- Where you are (position)
- Where you are going (destination)
- How you intend to get there (route, levels)
Cheers, HH.

The reality is guys, that VFR flight plan amendment that does not change the SARTIME in any way will, at best, be written on the "scratch pad" of the ATC then filed overnight.

Yes it will just be written down on a scratch pad. However what if you actually have an engine failure and they send out search and rescue. The first place they check is on your flight planned route.
You guys might not think it is important to make a diversion call until you are 50 ft off the ground after experiencing an engine failure 50 miles from your original route. Then you will wish you made the call.
I believe towards the end of last year they put an AIP sup out, outlining the new Diversion procedure and the new frequencies to make the call on.
The first call to flightwatch is something like this " ML cen flightwatch ABC vfr sartime flight revised details." Then they will say go ahead and then tell them the diversion you are doing as previously explained.
