Film Night at the Airways Museum Fri 9 May
It's time for our first Film Night for 2008 at the Airways Museum, Essendon Airport, and we've dug out some rippers from the archives!
Full details at http://www.airwaysmuseum.com Bookings are essential!

We've just completed a stocktake of all the films we've got on the shelves and we came across quite a few great candidates for future Film Nights.
In the meantime, we might just throw in a bonus short at the next one...

Hi Stationair8,
We're presently digitising our collection of video tapes (VHS & U-matic): that's fairly simple. We've also recently invested in a quality digital projector and screen to show digital films.
We're also investigating ways to get our film collection digitised. There are some technical problems with doing it ourselves, and getting it done commercially is enormously expensive. Having said that, we're working on it.
Whether we are ever likely to make them available for sale is another question again, as we don't hold copyright to the films.

Philthy, it may be worth checking to see if any copy rights exist, as normally copy rights expire after x number of years. A lot of the companies that had films made of their aircraft are no longer. It would be a service to both the Museum (from sales) and the industry as a whole to retain this history in a visual form

Hi Dog One,
Thanks for your interest. We're aware of copyright issues and of course also aware of the need to preserve these old films in a way that's accessible to people with an interest in aviation history.
Cheers,
Philthy

Hi Philthy - looking forward to this. Do you have any of the reel-to-reel or U-Matic tapes that were held by the the old DCA Film Library? They used have some rippers. Also, where you don't have copyright, are you able to offer video/DVD copies for rental?

Hi Teal,
Yes, we have the old DCA Film Library, which includes their collection of U-Matic video. Don't think we have any reel-to-reel, but we do have some quite old talking slide shows etc (there are a couple on our website).
I don't think we'll be in the business of renting films, unfortunately.
Sorry.
