cheapest way to transfer money?
Absolute best way is to give her an ATM card linked to the foreign account, as others have suggested.
There will always be fees associated with moving money from one country to the next. The ATM card (Cirrus or VisaPlus networks) is the quickest option, as you simply go to the ATM just as you would if it was a local account.
If you're worried that your wife will prioritise "coloured hair and well kept nails with matching shoes and handbag" over food and bills, then perhaps she needs to learn some fiscal responsibility. There are other options, including, as someone suggested, your wife earning her own money, which certainly teaches the value of money, but respectfully suggest that that is your(plural) problem, not that of the financial institutions.

Hi all,
I looked into the Cirrus/Maestro thing and I remember there being a $5.00 fee per transaction for HSBC AUD accounts.
As mentioned before inwards TT's to HSBC Australia's online savings a/c attract a $10 inbound fee, the xchange rates were OK.
In general I found it better to send the local currency and convert it to AUD at the other end, therefore attracting the 'buy' rate.
Having said that I will be looking into oxforex.
