I think Qantas' claim to fame is that it's the second oldest international airline in the world.
I believe this makes it is the oldest in the English speaking world, and it was the first I believe, to fly scheduled services around the world, although it no longer does so.
Um, and where does WA Airways operate to again?

Buster and Captain Claret
You are both correct, however, if you dig back far enough in QF literature you will find that statements were made that they were the second oldest airline in the world (without qualifiers)... and other incorrect statements.
Captain Claret, I didn't expect this from you...
Sarcasm doesn't suit you and it is irrelevant.
I've always understood that Pan Am were the first to fly around the world PA001 and PA002.
I had never heard of WA Airways until the Air Australia programme.
As an aside... Air Australia was a company or name registered to TAA when I was working with them.

W.A. Airways was an old aviation Company operating out of Perth from the original Perth Airport at Maylands. Here is a photo of one of their aircraft and hangar.

Do you reckon they hugged & kissed each other back then?![Confused](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Clarrie, if the International qualifier is the one, when did they start OS flying? As they weren't an International airline when they started, then you wouldn't count the start up date. (Yeah, yeah...semantics, I know but...WTF, I'm up for it!)![Wink](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/wink2.gif)
Well, if QF got a mild pasting about their start up ops...(I notice QF didn't need an AOC...bluddy typical!)...I can't wait to see how much of a touch up they give old Reg!!!

Cheesh, has Aus aviation been corrupt for that long? If this doco is correct the whole aviation industry is a mob of spivs. Even the great Hudson Fysh stole QANTAS
Looks like Qantas management were a pack of b*st*ards right from the word go!
Every second of every day, somewhere in the world, some employee is expressing this opinion of his management, and it is not just airline companies that have these employees.
Employees from all industries wear the rose tinted glasses - Qantas does not have a monopoly.

I'll try and leave the dripping sarcasm out of this post.
Incorrect.
See http://www.spiritsofansett.com/legends/brealey.htm. According to the link, Qantas was "established on 16 November 1920," but "did not operate its 1st scheduled service until 2 November 1922."
Whereas "The first prospectus for Western Australian Airways Ltd. was issued on 29 August" (1921), and their first scheduled service being 5 December 1921. Certainly ahead of Qantas in operating but not in being formed.
My original post was meant to be light hearted rather than sarcastic. In the contemporary sense, how does one compare an airline which operated for "less than 15 years", with one that is still operating 87 years after being established? West Australian Airlines isn't an airline, it was, many many years ago.
