Theory-ATPL, CPL, JAA or CASA?

I am looking for a little advice:

I have been trying to work out the differences between ATPL and CPL.

I have my PPL and want to progress, both theory as well as endorsements, etc and am looking for the most efficient way of doing it:

What is the difference between JAA and CASA ATPL? Is it better to do JAA or CASA?

Is it possible to do ATPL theory without having done CPL theory?
Is there an advantage?
Is it then possible to do the CPL flight test with ATPL theory credit?
-I have not been able to find the pre-requisites for sitting the ATPL theory, nor what the differences in the exams and syllabuses are for CPL or ATPL. Is the ATPL just a more advanced version of CPL or is it different completely?

Thanks in advance

Sprocket,

Firstly, are you Australian (citizen and have the right to live/work here?) or European?

After answering those questions, and you are elegible to do both, then ask yourself, where do you want to fly (make a career), AU or EU? Answering that yourself will determine whether you do JAA or CASA exams.

Now if you go down the CASA route, the CPL exams are a pre-requisite for the ATPL exams (just check out the CASA website, it has all the info there).

If you do a search on here, looking up something along the lines of CASA - JAA conversion a bunch of threads will pop up explaining what needs to be done to convert a licence, and you will find it is much harder than you think. To convert a CASA - JAA licence you vitually have to start from scratch (subject wise), so I guess what I am trying to get at, you have to decide where you want to make a career and do your licence there from day one.
