I didn't say you couldn't find a job either, I said you couldn't find a good job. By "good job" I mean one that suits you.

Really, there's no great mystery here. People fly because they like flying.

You say you get to spend every night at home. I don't like spending every night at home, and my wife doesn't like it either. I like the lifestyle I have. I'm only making one sacrifice at the moment, and that is that I'd prefer a different basing.

YMMV.

I do it because of the lifestyle it affords me. I am home every night and I get to either drop the kids off to school in the morning or pick them up after school. I very rarely miss both.

The pay isn't as fantastic as other industries out there at the moment but my family life is what keeps me getting up well before the sparrows.

Sometimes you have bad days and wonder whether the grass is really greener but I really think that I would have far more of those bad days sitting at a desk 8 hours a day, five days a week.

It's the only thing I know how to do

I can see why some people get frustrated with the industry. Some of us were lucky enough to get through quickly on the inevitable waves of hiring that come and go, and simply by being in the right place at the right time. I can imagine it must be frustrating to spend year after year trying to climb the ladder to little avail.

Most of us have times when we weigh up the sacrifices we've made for aviation, and ask ourselves if it was really worth it. For me, the answer has always been yes. The day that changes, will be the day I flag the whole thing.

This is still an exciting industry, and one that's full of possibilities. It's not for everyone, but when it's really in your blood, you can't imaging doing anything else.

I also dispute the claim that flight crew jobs don't stack up against other industries. When someone in their 20s has the realistic ability to earn well into six figures, for bugger all work, and with no real take-home stress, I don't think that's a bad wicket.

Everything was coming second to flying
Isn't that the way it's supposed to be?

Cutter,

It's easy to pick up and run with a couple of words but our industry definitely doesn't stack up against other industries out there. Mine workers make far in excess of what we do and you can't tell me that they go go home worrying about the rocks left back on site... Not that many six figure 20 something pilots out there but there are some.

As I originally posted, best lifestyle choice against money earned but by no means is it the best money I could make. It's the best choice by far when weighing my life against my desire to do better and make more.
