Career Expectations

Howdy Folks

I'm wondering if someone could give me a quick update on the state of the aviation industry in oz. I'm pretty up to date with the U.S situation and the pilot shortage but how is it really playing out down here?

Some of the stateside regionals are grabbing guys with as little as 500/100me and are practicaly begging guys to show up to class with sign on bonuses etc. So things are pretty good hiring wise over there for the low pay style regional gigs.

So how is the "shortage" affecting the jobs here? or is there even a pilot shortage at all?? The reason I ask is that i've looked at some of the regionals and the RPT operators here and they are all around 1500/500me which doesn't sound like much of a shortage of applicants to me.

I'm considering at the moment whether to drop the $$$ on a CPL and related ratings and would appreciate some advice about an expected career path/progression here in Oz.

Seems like its a great time to be a pilot in other parts of the world but that it might not be the case here?? anyone wanna elaborate.

Cheers

Considering the industry situations in the last 15 years and job prospects, now would be the best time to get started.

I think sometime during 2008, the regionals will be so badly hurt and under-crewed that they are either going to have to

1) Fold
2) Park Aeroplanes, or
3) Drop the mins

I hope they take the 3rd option, because that means jobs.

If not, the majors are going to have to take guys with little experience.

However you look at it, I think pilots generally will be in a very good position jobwise in the next 10 years.
