I recently got talking to a chap at the aeroclub, I was passing through to catch up with someone. A very unassuming sort. He was watching his son complete a rating on an Arrow. His son is flying part time at the moment, with plans to go the whole hog. He started to ask me what I am doing with my flying, I told him what I am up to with my aerobatics, and immediate plans etc. Got talking about the Red bull Air Racing ,and how he was good mates with Paul Bonhomme. When I finally worked out his connection to aviation - 15yrs B747 Cptn for British Airways - I was rather suprised and quickly did a mental backtrack to make sure I didn't make a complete idiot out of myself, which hopefully, I don't think I did.
What my point is, he went on to say how much he is looking forward to going flying with his son in the Arrow - "I haven't done any flying for so many years." unquote.

If that doesn't say something rather significant I don't know what does. To those who are in a hurry, slow down. There is more to aviation than Piper Cherokees and Boeing 747s. Or is that all that we are taught to know about these days? I've taken a different tack, got onto a good guaranteed and safe income first, working on the professional flying career second, while flying in the third dimension every other day of the week.

They are some wise words indeed I can personally identify with a similar story, meeting a PPL who came in a 182 at the Birdsville Hotel who ended up being a retired 777 skipper.

Airlines want to see you progressing your experience. 5000 in a 172 isn't going to impress. A balance of experience is what is required. The old age commensurate with experience theory.
