Agreed it looks less than professional to take your headset off and call the AWIS (especially if you briefed your pax on not using phones in flight) but I'm sure they'd appreciate it if you tell them it'll save time rather than flying about assessing the weather yourseld or not being able to descend to a lower minium.

As an aside it's a similar setup at YCBA (cobar). Managed to only get mobile coverage about 2 miles from the township (total 5 nm CBA) to call the AWIS.

Saved me a good couple of minutes though as the info it gave me allowed for a straight-in approach to RWY 23.

come on.

its ridiculous to think its acceptable to have to use a mobile phone to get weather when inbound. one often has more things to do with their hands inbound to need to dick around with a mobile too.

i used to do it to get weather inbound for knx from the NW (from oombi, lumburu etc etc take your pick) with reception from wyndham. but it often dropped out just after it says "wind:"

with a large portion of accidents and incidents occurring during the approach/landing phase one would think it is almost essentail to provide the pilot with every piece of information available. if theres a navaid there, its already transmitting a signal. might as well make it more useful! how hard can it be?

...disco

I couldn't imagine trying to use a mobile while approaching an airport, but thats probably because i only have one hand (never try to feed a wild croc!). Just landing in calm conditions is bad enough juggling between yoke and throttles. Sometimes I use my feet to extend gear and flaps if the turbulence is bad.

Cheers,

Tiger.

It's on the way...

The latest on this one:

After numerous meetings with airport management here, it looks like it's a go ahead.

The BoM have quoted the airport management for the job, and they have agreed to take this initiative further, which is to their credit.

The expense of the installation will be covered by a $0.60 increase in the landing fee at YBMA over the next 12 months, which isn't too bad when you're already paying at least $20 or so anyway I suppose. I feel that an extra $0.60 per tonne would've been better though.

Thanks to all who contributed. Seeya soon disco, if you can go for one week without another bloody unseviceability!!!

For those interested,

I've just received notification from airport management that the Mount Isa AWIB will be installed and operational before Christmas.

The cost will be recovered by landing fee increase, $0.50 per tonne MTOW.

I was pleased to see that there is a willingness despite a limited budget to expend financial resource on useful improvements, and not just useless security improvements at remote airports.

Payrise??

I doubt the operator I work for will be able to afford it, cause apparently the landing fees at their main base are about to increase...

DOH!!
