Human Factors ATPL Exam

Hey all got my AHUF next week and was wondering if anyone had any tips for the exam because I've heard its never what people expected....i'm doing it through self study and been through the atpl and cpl syllabuses and was told to focus on CRM and multi-crew stuff.....is there anything anyone can say about it?

What Books are you studying with? I did it with the CPL HP book (The one with the Barbed wire) and some older books as reference (Human Factors for general Aviation)

You will need to read HUF by Tony Wilson and the missing link one by Bob Tait. Go through all the revision questions and I strongly advise that you do the AFT practice cyber exams

dunno about u guys but i found ahuf alot easier than chuf!

finished in like ten minutes with 93% but in cpl i took the whole time and got just over 70%

as long as you know the syllabus you should be sweet dude.

a lot of multi crew stuff, ie. scenarios like KLM/Pan Am, BMI at Kegworth etc
stuff on leadership styles, motivation, hypoxia/hyperventilation. If i were you i'd buy the AFT cyber exams which are the closest thing you can get to the casa exam- although not the same as the casa q's. Good luck!

Yeah a lot of stuff on CRM and attitudes and the way people behave in wierd situations. Study all the accidents such as Tenerife and the Potamac river one, the dc3 when it did a dead stick landing. One they will probably trip you up on is the Air New Zealand DC10 that hit the solid cloud in Antarctica, me and a mate both got a Question on it and had never heard of it, both got it wrong ofcourse. Anyway, study the Bob Tait "Barbed wire" book thoroughly and you will pass without any other texts.
Good Luck

How do we know what case studies could be in the test, apart from obvious ones.....as there is nothing in the syllabus about it?

Mate,

I used the Bob Tait book, and passed with flying colours.

I also found the ATPL exam easier then the CPL.

Don't study the accidents! Study the theory of leadership, multi crew relations etc. The questions are asked in such a way that you will easily be able to answer any on the "case study's" as long as you've studied the theory behind it.

I used the AFT book, got 97% in 15mins. It aint hard (I just didn't know the one I got wrong, it was talking about error/cause/removal in a way I hadn't come across in my study.)

Yeh i got that error cause removal ECR question as well. i didnt come across It in any of my study notes had no idea what the hell It was... I think it has something to do with deliberately causing errors to identify them, find the cause and remove them? I think, im not sure...I got that one wrong i think.. does anyone know what it is? im really interested in knowing

I couldn't find much in the texts about it, only that its a program with emphasis on prevention rather than cure for flight deck problems....?

Be prepared to define some new words you've never heard of before!!

There's the occasional random question where you're the captain and have a junior officer being a fool in the cockpit: do you......

a) Give him an uppercut
b) Encourage them
c) Get all touchy feely and apologise for doing nothing
d) Invite them out to dinner

It's pretty simple. Crews are encouraged to report errors so that the causes can be identified and removed. I had heard of it, and thought I understood it, but the answers to the question all seemed equally correct.

Hey guys, just a quick question that I thought i knew the answer to...but two different books are giving different answers:

Which of the following is an advantage of digital instruments over circular guage type instruments:

a) comparison between instruments is easier
b)the exact value of a parameter is easier to read
c) trends and rates are easier to interpret
d) digital displays are easier to scan

i though it was that the exact value is easier to read than analogue displays but some texts are saying trends and rates are easier to interpret...?

any suggestions are appreciated
cheers

oh and go the socceroos
