Converting my ATP to a NZ ATPL

I just found this forum, what a great site!!

I will retiring from the USAF soon and will hopefully be relocating to NZ so my wife can be closer to her family. I am looking at converting my US ATP to a NZ ATPL and am wondering what is involved? I have looked at the CAA website and as near as I can tell I have to take the NZ Airlaws exam and have a current medical? Is this correct? Am I missing anything? How tough is this exam and finally what is the best way to prep for this?

Thanks in advance for any help/assistance provided!!

Cheers,
JD

Hi,

I presume you have read this document, http://www.caa.govt.nz/fulltext/TTMR...ition_Info.pdf

There are some things in addition to the medical and exam.

here are a couple of extracts

(b) Meet the minimum flight experience requirements for the issue of an NZ ATPL as prescribed in AC 61, and;

(c) Produce evidence of having completed at least 500 hours as pilot in command or 1000 hours as co-pilot on multi-crew operations, in multi-engine aircraft, on commercial IFR operations subsequent to the issue of the flight crew licence that has been presented for recognition. Such experience is to have been gained in countries which come under the jurisdiction of the overseas authority that issued the licence, and; ...

...(e) Pass an ATPL issue flight test with a Civil Aviation Authority or approved airline flight examiner, ...

...Persons wishing to undertake ATPL (Aeroplane) issue tests in approved airline simulators, should note that the only approved devices in New Zealand are owned by Air New Zealand. These are for Boeing 737-300, Boeing 747-400,Boeing 767 and Airbus A320 types.

Please note that except where specifically provided for, P1 under supervision,
command practice, ICUS or similar time is not acceptable in lieu of the minimum experience requirements laid down in AC61-1.7 for the ATPL (A).
ATPL issue flight tests must be undertaken in multi-engine aircraft types or flight simulators approved by the Director.

Go here to find the syllabus for the ATPL Law exam and minimum flight time requirments. http://www.caa.govt.nz/fulltext/acs/AC61-1_7.pdf

Don't forget you will also need a checkride. But basically if you meet the hour requirements after they asses your logbook the only exam is the ATPL Law exam.

PM me if you want info on obtaining a study guide for this. It is not like the US ATP exam format. I have done both exams and the NZ one is harder but if you are reasonably current you can do this in 1-2 weeks with this study guide and sample papers.

Thanks for the help

Thanks 24/09 and 123567 for the assistance.
I should meet the hour requirments easily so it looks like I need to get started prepping for the Airlaws exam and a checkride. It's been almost 10 years since I took my ATP check here. Little bit of work ahead of me.

Cheers,
JD

PITA

Having just done it... it is a complete pain... Start with the medical... get that out of the way... then contact Stonybook for the ATPL prep... well worth the money... then get with ASL... they will validate your logs... that was about 250 I think... the medical cost around 700 by the time it was all over... exam prep 160.... exam 160... and then there is the checkride... you cant do it in anything small... so unless you have a large type (737/767/747/A320/or even convair) you are going to be out of luck... so you then have to sit the CPL exam... and IR exam... then to top it off... there are two check rides... one for the CPL and the other for the IR.

PM Me if you want anything else

As far as I know the ATPL flight test can be done in a pressurised Twin. I know of it being done in Air Wanganui's Mojave.
