Heard reports of a plane down in western NSW, a woman walked for more than an hour and a half to alert services at a roadhouse at Packsaddle?

Pilot feared dead in crash

Source: AAP

December 06, 2005

EMERGENCY services fear a pilot has died in a plane crash near Broken Hill in far-western New South Wales.

Police have yet to confirm the crash or the death, but say the accident was reported by a woman who walked for more than half an hour to call emergency services from a roadhouse at Packsaddle, about 200km north of Broken Hill.
Police believe the plane went down between 8am and 8.30am (AEDT) today, about 147km north of Broken Hill.

Based on the woman's report, a man, who is thought to be plane's pilot, had died in the crash, a police spokeswoman said.

She said police had not yet reached the crash site.

Police said they were not clear how the woman was connected to the crash.

"We need more information at this stage about the woman," the spokeswoman said.
"We don't know what her involvement was ... if she was on the plane, or just saw it.

"She was without transport, which might mean she was on the plane but we don't know," she said.

"She walked a very long way, half an hour, maybe more, to the Packsaddle Roadhouse to notify police."
