As I recall it as an F/O, Bill Rodgers used to CALL gear down as per the manual- spoken words- "gear down".

So it may not have been him.

We had two Rogers/ Rodgers in MAL-

Rogers 1 and Rodgers 2.

Rogers 1, older, the great Barrie Rogers, used to do everything with style. Wore his pilots hat from sign on to sign off, putting the headphones over it. Even the way he held a cigarette was unusual- between thumb and forefinger.

His preferred signal for gear down was unspoken- Right hand clenched, thumb extended, flicking the wrist anticlockwise. That was gear down.

So your Captain that day probably was Rogers 1.

As for Peter. He was an F/O when I was there, permanent it was thought. Everyone knew why. May well have been reunited with the DC3 left hand seat, don't know. Great fun at the bar though.

This is the Captain Rogers I refer to in earlier post
Ok, he used his thumb, hell, its only forty years ago, some things slip

Edit to add credit Dennis Grey photo: Dennis had the good sense to take photos while the rest of us drank beer and chased morally loose women (Hang on, he did that as well...)

He's your man tinny, Rogers 1. In pensive mode.
45 years ago indeed. Time like an ever rolling stream etc.

Never mind. Keep up the good fight, carry your halbards to the enemy, refuse reheated chicken tikka, and always wear your brown shoes off duty.

Also eschew old age. After a bottle of the fourpenny dark, who cares.

Nick Crawley

Hydromet,
Replied to your enquiry re Nick Crawley a couple of days ago but it seems to have disappeared into the ether so here goes again.
Knew Nick when he was a didiman at Ialibu in the mid sixties. If I remember he was ex Kenya. A lot of them came to PNG to escape the troubles in Kenya at the time and many found work on the highlands coffee plantations. At "sundowner" time at Ialibu we would fire a shot over each others house (I was camped at the local kiap Peter Sisley's house at the time) to say that the SP was cold and ripe for the picking. Eventually stopped the shooting as we didn't want to hit some innocent meri working in her kau kau garden.
Also remember the local school inspector (????? Bagley),who was based at Mendi flying his C150-that's right a Cessna 150 in the highlands-into Ialibu from time to time. On departure he would disappear into the kunai at the end of the strip and eventually reappear climbing at about nought feet per minute on his way back to Mendi. Needless to say he never carried a passenger.

John Close

To those of you who knew of John Close of Dero Club fame I have just spoken to his wife,Olive, who informs me that John has had one of his legs amputated (diabetes) and is in a nursing home in Nambour John owned two aircraft in
PNG.an E33 Bonanza, P2 FWW, and a Tiger Moth, P2 CTM, (Close's Tiger Moth).
Last time I looked at the VH register there was a VH FWW based at Alice Springs. As for the Tiger,Mark Shanley ferried it to Caboolture. Don't know what happened to it then, but if anyone is interested I could find out from Olive.
The E33 was a four seat 285hp aircraft not to be confused with the Beech 33, the 225hp Debonair.

It is so comforting to know that, having enjoyed time living in Port Moresby, I can be content in virtually any city in the world.

From the PNG Gossip Newsletter.......

** Vale Bob Browne **

The man behind the Grassroots cartoon has died at the Port Moresby General
Hospital. Pastor Bob Browne had been fighting cancer in the neck and
throat since 2006. He was hospitalised four times, the latest in January
this year before his passing on the 2nd of March. He provided a generation
of Papua New Guineans with a deeply insightful and often hilarious
commentary on life in the region - especially its political processes -
seen through the eyes the Papua New Guinean Everyman, Grass Roots.

Browne came to PNG from England when he was 24.

Then there is another Bob Browne , but that's another story.

Looks like the compensation lawyers have been busy.

PNG Airliner ordered to pay K811,000
By Online Editor
4:16 pm GMT+12, 03/03/2011, Papua New Guinea

An Aviation company was yesterday ordered by the National Court to pay more than K800,000 (US$309, 000) to the family of a pilot who died in a plane crash in 1995.

The long-fought claim was based on negligence by Trans Niugini Airways Ltd for allowing pilot John Kale to fly an airplane which was not airworthy.

The incident happened on July 25, 1995, when the Britten-Norman Islander (BN2 A-21), carrying 13 bags of coffee weighing more than 700kg, crashed in fine weather during take-off from Karimui airstrip in Chimbu.

Yesterday’s was the second of two decisions by the court. In May 2006, the court ruled against Trans Niugini Airways, which had breached aviation safety practices and standards when it “recklessly permitted an aircraft that was plagued with chronic engineering faults to be flown”.

In yesterday’s decision, Justice Les Gavara Nanu outlined assessment of the cost totalling K811,742.66. (US$314,550.27)

At the time of the tragedy, the pilot’s wife and plaintiff in the case, Esther Kuri, was 22 years old while their only son was two years old.

Kale, who was 27 then, was a licensed and qualified commercial pilot.

The payment of the claim covered 11 years, 11 months and one week, in which loss of dependency, increase risk of orphanhood, estate claim, special damages, legal costs and interest was looked at.

The decision itemised how much would go to the wife, the son and the pilot’s parents.

The cost of trial on the issue of liability, decided on in 2006, will also be paid by the defendant.

The earlier court decision said that in permitting the deceased to fly such an aircraft, the defendant (company) had acted without due regard for the safety of the deceased and was in breach of its duty of care.

During that time, the court also found that the Civil Aviation report, which attributed the cause of the crash to pilot error, was grossly flawed.

DC3 (Slightly bent at Kaiapit.)

Google "EXKIAP.NET"
Open "Ex Kiap - past Papua New Guinea Patrol Officers - PNG Past and Present".
When the page opens click on "Photographs" in the green strip on the left of the page.
In the "Individuals Contributions" column click on Bob Blaikie. His photos and atatched notes will open.
There are heaps of interesting photos linked to the other names in the column.
