FAA ATP with type rating

Good day,
I am an FO with 1500 hours on ATR, I fly now on a ICAO CPL ME/IR , I would like to obtain an FAA ATP. Is there any training centers apart from flight safety that has ATR72 sims ?

Could someone shed some light on this matter for me please, even thou i am rated and flying the ATR would i need to do another ATR type rating course as i would like the ATR rating stamped on my license.
Or is just just a few sim sessions ?

Toulouse, Paris, Madrid, Helsinki within Europe. Jo'burg, Bangkok and KL outside (I'm sure there are others) but I don't believe any of these are FAA approved.

FAA ATP can be obtained concurrently with PIC type rating, not with SIC type rating. Even if you have PIC ATR rating on your ICAO license, FAA will only give you a SIC rating. Therefore, you will have to do the whole PIC type rating again in U.S (if you can find FAA approved ATR sim).

so after i complete the ATP ground school would i have to initially do the sic type rating then have to do another Sim for pic ATP ?
I dont have to do all of type rating do i ? i mean from ground school up ?

@ zft, Thanks but i am looking for sims in US, as i am looking to obtain my ATP there

Contact Simuflite or Flight Safety and ask them. You may have to attend the entire course to meet their certificate requirements.

Flight Safety in Houston has the only active ATR-72 sims on the FAA simulator list. You should contact them for course requirements.

And no, you don't have to do the SIC type first. The SIC type rating is a joke the FAA created to keep foreign CAAs happy.

Unless you're planning to fly for someone like Cape Air out of Guam, why do you even need an ATR type? You can just get an FAA ATP without any type ratings.

@marker i am in contact with FS, but so far every email they sent me are more confusing than the other.
- they told i can do my ground school with them for 1400 usd then another member told me FS don't offer FAA ground school and i will have to complete it before i join the sim.
- the price was said to be 16500 usd but then i had to email and tell them i already am a rated FO the prices was dropped to 10500 as a prior experience pilot.

correct me if i am wrong but i thought after obtaining the FAA ATP ground i thought i only needed a few sim sessions on my check ride to obtain a full ATP?
or is the high price as i am converting my CPL ME/IR to ATP ?

@flyboy I wanted the ATR type because i already fly on it, also for captaincy in future but the way its going i might have to rethink, do you have any suggestions for other flying schools?

@desert thank you will look them up

@pby done sir

I guess it depends on what you mean by "ground school" if you mean type specific ground training that would allow you to get a type rating in the apirplane, I'd be surprised if Flight safety didn't offer this (For a fee of course) . That's probably what FS was referring to.

If you';re talking about whatever ground school you need to pass you ATP written examination, I'd be surprised if Flight safety *did* offer this at one of their simulator centers. For the record, there's not currently any specific requirement for ground school for the ATP, you just have to be able to pass the written test. How you study for that is your responsibility. However that will change on 31 July 2014, after which there will be a requirement for a training program.

Apparently they are assuming that someone who is currently flying the airplane will need less prep time than someone who has never flown it, and their price is adjusted accordingly. What's confusing about that?

Well, strictly speaking, you don't need any sim sessions. If you were very confident of your abilities, you could just schedule the sim and the examiner and take your checkride. I'm not saying that's a wise course of action, just there's currently no regulatory requirement for anything more than that. I would assume that flight safety's prices reflect the amount of Sim training that they expect someone who hasn't flown the airplane will take to be prepared for the check ride.

A squared, when i said ground school i was referring to ATP ground school, one member said i could do it with them and another said i couldn't, contradicting information for a guy who is trying to get information from half way across the world makes it a little bit confusing don't you think ?

The price adjustment is not confusing at all but i already had sent them all my experiences but i had to remind them that i was a rated pilot then they changed the price for me, and so far i have been quoted 3 different prices, again confusing

Fs does not provide just a ATP sim check for ATR
To receive an ATR 61.157 ATP check ride require a full, initial or prior experience training course
The FAA approvals are based on the full course

Anyways i will post the information i obtained so it clears up for other people in my shoes.

1. Apply for license verification and conversion to a US Private with FAA

2. Vero Beach, Florida for the ATP Academic Training and passage of the written test.
3. TSA Screening Approval – CAT I approval which will include fingerprinting to enroll in the FSI ATR course. The Houston Center can assist with this once scheduled.
3. Houston, TX for the ATR Prior Experience course based on your 1500 hours of prior experience.

Hope this helps
Thanks you for all the help

Asquared,

It is possible to "self study" for the ATP knowledge test (until August of this year) and if you are just taking the ATP checkride in a small airplane you can show up to an examiner and say, "Let's do the checkride." However, if you are getting an ATP type rating 61.157 (b) says:

(b) Aircraft type rating. Except as provided in paragraph (c) of this section, a person who applies for an aircraft type rating to be added to an airline transport pilot certificate or applies for a type rating to be concurrently completed with an airline transport pilot certificate:
