Military Aviation A forum for the professionals who fly military hardware. Also for the backroom boys and girls who support the flying and maintain the equipment, and without whom nothing would ever leave the ground. All armies, navies and air forces of the world equally welcome here.

You're clouding the argument somewhat here I think, opso.
Yes, progression up the tree no doubt brings new perspectives and emphases, but my objection to the system (the Aussie one, that is, although I see some clear parallels in some of the posts here) is that not enough importance seems to be placed on the ability of SQNLDR / WGCDRS to effectively lead and organise their units in the primary role of operating military aircraft.

That to me is the obvious and necessary skill area that should override all other considerations - these people should be able to lead by example and have junior squadron members thinking 'Hey, the boss really knows his/her stuff', not 'What are we going to do about sir?' (to steal a line from a flying safety video).

I've been in squadrons where the CO's flying and operating skills were right up there with the best, notwithstanding the fewer flying hours; and in others where the boss was not even current and seemingly couldn't be bothered about it, and the respect gained by the former type amongst all the squadron members(not just aircrew) was a very positive factor.

It's very annoying to see a person who should be concentrating on developing the flying and fighting organisation of the unit unable to fight his or her way out the office door for a pile of reports, returns and justifications of this, that and the other.
