I seem to recall that when I was lucky enough to go through 4 FTS on the Hawk in the very early eighties supersonic training was part of the syllabus and we had to achieve M1.2 in a shallow dive to achieve true supersonic with the shock wave off the tail.

Also I recall from memory alone, that when we brought the Tutor into service that the CAA were amenable on principle to it being operated at 250' but the whole procurement and into service operational process was so rushed with a very small team of people, two, that it was decided not to pursue the issue.
