The contract will be to maintain and update 15 planes ( 12 existing, three on order ) by the end of the decade. An important part of the upgrade will be to make the planes "high-level communication-hubs " so they can function as flying command and control centres. This will be the first step in integrating the A 330MRTT into the SCAF plan ( Future Aviation Combat Plan ) shared by France, Germany, and Spain around a common aircraft.

The EUR1.2 billion figure you cited includes a 10-year sustainment and support agreement for the fleet, but still a significant enhancement and one that the RAF has been looking at for its Voyager fleet also.
"ne that the RAF has been looking at for its Voyager fleet also."

Kind of sounds like some of that future capability mused for the KC-46 with the miles of extra cabling, power and hardening.
Presumably since Airbus knows what the USAF spec was for the "KC-X" tankers won by the KC-46A, they'd be suggesting a functionally-identical fit for this Armée de l'Air fleet fit?
