Beverley Woes
Possibly a re-working of our departure from Plymouth Roborough after a BoB display. It was early evenng, Roborough was a grass field and quite wet. To maximise our take-off available run we had reversed right up to the boundary fence (tailplane overhanging the road (!). Tried to set full power for takeoff and, with the parking brake set, we started to slide forward with the wheels locked. Gave up the struggle and went for it (successfully) followed by a V2 climb - one of aviation's more impressive manoeuvres !
Re. 'Timber' Woods, I had the pleasure of watching his retirement flight at Brough. when we went to pick up one of ours after a 'heavy' check. Three dimensional skill and intimate knowledge of variou building heights made for a unique display

brakedwell, many eons ago there was a story in `Air Clues` about an Anson that landed on an icy runway, probably sloping as well, that was approaching the other end.still at a fast pace,so the Captain opened up one engine ,spinning the aircraft around, swapped engines at the 180*point,then taxiied in...

t must have been quite a squeeze.
Indeed it was - that was why we had to position for take-off by reversing right up to the boundary fence with our tail over the road and power up against the brakes !

When I was on ATC Summer Camp at RAF Finningley on or about 1973, I seem to remember a Beverley painted in a desert colour scheme with a black Scorpion painted on the nose. We did get an opportunity to climb inside but it's condition appeared to be beyond flight.
Does anyone who was serving there in the Varsity/Dominie days remember it?
As an aside I still have the chart that was given to me after the Navex in the Varsity, (tail-code Yankee). Also got a ride in a Hastings C1.

Finningley had one of the RAF's Regional Collections of aircraft (others being Colerne, Cosford and St Athan) but as Finningley was due to host the 1977 Jubilee Review of the RAF, the collection was dispersed to make room. The Beverley was too big/expensive to move and was scrapped.
Ah yes ! ... smelly scorpions and Jane's panties ! Somewhat oddly, I served on 84 twice and on Beverleys but not as a combination !
Nice model but much too clean !.
At the time of the changeover from ABLE, BAKER to ALPHA, BRAVO, for a short while, the only serviceable Bev operating from K'sar was GOLF. It was regularly crewed with a signaller who with local stations used the callsign MIKE OSCAR BLUNDERBUSS XMAS GURGLE. (possibly apocryphal !)

I was also on ATC Summer camp at Finningley in '73 also. We went inside the Beverley, it had a strong damp, dusty smell. I well remember it. They also had a Shackleton and an Argosy at the time. Not surprised it was scrapped.

She is coming apart and parts are moving north, you can see where they are unzipping the upper cabin.

She is on the move, bit by bit ![Thumb](https://www.pprune.org/images/smilies/thumbs.gif)
I am so glad the previous plan to turn it into a clamping pod fell through as those engines were planned to be sold off.

It looks like a bit of corrosion to fix on top of one of the control surfaces.

It had been feared she might be scrapped should she fail to find a buyer, but the museum was able to save the historic aircraft after receiving more than £70,000 in donations to cover the cost of further dismantling work then transporting Big Bev to Cumbria.
Chairman Dougie Kerr told Forces News the museum was hoping to raise a total of £100,000, which would let staff carry out restoration work, repaint the aircraft and put her on permanent display – a project that could take around two years.
XB259 is being disassembled and transported to Cumbria by road, with the whole aircraft expected to have reached her new home by the end of June.
Mr Kerr said the aircraft is in fairly complete condition and will be repainted in silver with an orange nose rather than the overseas scheme of light stone and dark earth that she currently wears.
When complete, visitors will be able to go inside the transport aircraft to get a better idea of her huge size and carrying capacity.

Although I flew in several Beverleys from Abingdon in the '60s, I never actually saw '259 apart from possibly during various Farnborough Airshows and by the time I arrived at Farnborough it had already been flown to Luton, however just after I arrived in 1974 I was told that '259 was due to be flown from Luton to Paull that weekend by an RAE Farnborough crew; I dare say it had to be flown by military personnel as there were no civil pilots licensed for it.
I'm glad it's gone to a good home anyway.
By the way, did Beverleys lack a parking brake? I ask because on one flight from Abingdon, the loady asked 4 of us older cadets to get ready next to the rear side doors so that as the aircraft came to a halt, we could leap out and put chocks under the mainwheels and of course they were big chocks. This took place on a sunday hence there were no flight line mechanics on duty (the AEF and UAS had not moved in from White Waltham at this time)
