Ukraine War Thread Part 2

Russia is already a very violent society - especially away from the cities - so I don't think that tens or hundreds more rapes and murders will change anything., other than perhaps the population might become more likely to practice self-defence - perhaps even pre-emptively.

More on the Ukrainian General sacked. Good to see junior officers speaking out to voice concerns.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sacked a senior general amid accusations of excessive casualties.
Lieutenant General Yuri Sodol, who had been the commander of the Joint Forces of Ukraine's Armed Forces, was replaced by Brigadier General Andriy Hnatov.
Mr Zelensky announced the dismissal following a complaint from Azov Brigade chief Major Bohdan Krotevych to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), alleging that Gen Sodol had had "more Ukrainian soldiers killed than any Russian general".
The President said he made the decision after discussing personnel issues within the Armed Forces of Ukraine with the Commander-in-Chief, the Chief of the General Staff and the Minister of Defence.
He did not give a reason for the dismissal, however, the night before, Maj Krotevych, the head of Ukraine's controversial yet influential Azov Battalion, criticised an unnamed general on Telegram accusing him of losing regions, dozens of cities and thousands of soldiers.
Without directly naming Lt Gen Sodol, Maj Krotevych's post said: "Sometimes I think the world sends us scumbags to bring us together.
"And all the military now understand what kind of person I'm talking about, because 99% of the military hate him for what he does."
Maj Krotevych said he would always be ashamed that he did not take a stance earlier and stressed that this was his personal decision and he was ready to face the backlash from speaking out.
"I don't care if they start an investigation against me and I don't care if they put me in jail," he said.
The Ukrainian military has been through several top brass reshuffles, as the Russian army has slowly advanced in eastern Ukraine.
Gen Sodol was made commander of the Joint Forces in February 2024, as Valeriy Zaluzhnyi was dismissed after public differences with President Zelensky over the conduct of the war.
Gen Zaluzhnyi was replaced by Oleksandr Syrskyy as commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

I don't think we can necessarily claim Russia is more violent than other countries if we look at world stats.

Some informed speculation on Twitter that F-16s have carried out their first combat mission in Ukraine. Surprised no-one has mentioned here.
Fingers crossed this is true.. I guess the coming days will tell.

Vladimir Putin is facing embarrassment as official Kremlin documents reveal that Russian warplanes have mistakenly dropped nearly 40 deadly glide bombs on their own cities, in what has been a damaging 24 hours for Russia.
These hefty bombs, packed with up to 500 kg of explosives, are capable of creating massive craters 20 metres deep and six metres across.

Interesting news story from the AP:
DNIPROPETROVSK REGION, Ukraine (AP) — At a rural penal colony in southeast Ukraine, several convicts stand assembled under barbed wire to hear an army recruiter offer them a shot at parole. In return, they must join the grueling fight against Russia...{snip}...More than 3,000 prisoners already have been released on parole and assigned to military units after such recruitment was approved by parliament in a controversial mobilization bill last month, Ukrainian Deputy Justice Minister Olena Vysotska told The Associated Press.

"The ratio of Ukrainian and Russian military personnel losses at this stage of the war is one to six, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on June 30 in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer."Indeed, they (Russian forces) have much more people, and indeed we care for our people more. We will not have more people than Russia (on the battlefield)," Zelensky said.
Zelensky added that the ratio was one to four earlier, but now it is six to one, considering the situation in the directions of the cities of Pokrovsk and Kharkiv.
Russia has lost over 540,000 troops in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to Ukraine's General Staff. This number includes both killed and injured."

For comparison this was the previous best public domain data I had noted down. In retrospect, and if the quoted statement above is true, then the ratios below would appear to have been fairly accurate. If one thinks the above is accurate and that the definition of the ratio is consistent then one can calculate out the missing UKR WIA data. That missing WIA calculation in turn aligns with the generally held view that WIA survivors are more likely on the UKR side than the RUS side.

To bring it up to date the latest set of UKR claims for cumulative Russian losses up to 1-July-2024 are :"Russia has lost 543,810 troops in Ukraine since the beginning of its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces reported on July 1.
This number includes 1,110 casualties Russian forces suffered over the past day.
According to the
, Russia has also lost 8,099 tanks, 15,550 armored fighting vehicles, 19,643 vehicles and fuel tanks, 14,599 artillery systems, 1,111 multiple launch rocket systems, 874 air defense systems, 360 airplanes, 326 helicopters, 11,620 drones, 28 ships and boats, and one submarine."
