Very true! The OH observes that some items are double the price they were a year ago.

Unfortunately Putin doesn't care about the residents of Belgorod etc. He'll pretend he does, but he doesn't.

In Russia, this will be usefully spun as "Nazi terrorism". At best, it's a little bit of "feel better" for the Ukranians and the West, but other than that - useless. He has absolute control over Russian perceptions via the Kremlin press, anti-dissent laws and control of social media.

Also, we give him access to project his fake narratives and distortion into our minds via Telegram, X, and our free press. We can't do the same to the Russians. He's closed the door, it's one-way only.

I'm hoping that those who stand on the Ukranian side have some half-decent "assymetric" plans up their sleeve and possibly some long-range weaponry.

CNN Analysis. Ukraine is going to struggle if just provided the means for brute force.

You nailed that dive. By the time I got done on PPRuNe the other day I was in a worse mood than when I started, so I decided to stay away from PPRuNe for a bit, until I was in a better mood. The weather here is nice, good for yard work and cooking on the Weber. We did Angus beef burgers, New Braunfels made sausage, mushrooms, onions and bell peppers for the gathering at La Casa del Lobo Solitario.

Russia says 10 people killed in Ukrainian attack on Belgorod

Moscow says it shot down 32 Ukrainian drones, a day after Russia launched one of the deadliest attacks in the Ukraine war.
Published On 30 Dec 202330 Dec 2023At least 10 people, including a child, have been killed and 45 injured following a Ukrainian attack on the centre of the Russian provincial capital of Belgorod, the Russian Emergencies Ministry has said. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Saturday that the attack on Belgorod, about 30km (19 miles) from the border with Ukraine, had hit a residential area. In a Telegram post, he urged all residents to move to air raid shelters as sirens sounded.

Belgorod borders Ukraine’s Luhansk, Sumy and Kharkiv regions, some of which were hit by Russian air raids on Ukraine on Friday, in what was one of the deadliest attacks since the war began in February 2022. The death toll has risen to 39 from those attacks. {snip} Russia’s Defence Ministry said its anti-aircraft units had destroyed 13 Ukrainian rockets over the Belgorod region on Friday.

And Russian forces shot down 32 Ukrainian drones across the country, Moscow officials said earlier on Saturday. Drones were seen in the skies over Moscow, Bryansk, Oryol, and Kursk regions, the ministry said in a statement. All the drones had been destroyed by air defences, it added.

Cities across western Russia have come under regular attack from drones since May, with Russian officials blaming Kyiv.

Ukrainian officials never acknowledge responsibility for attacks on Russian territory or the Crimean Peninsula. However, larger aerial attacks against Russia have previously followed heavy assaults on Ukrainian cities.

Russian drone attacks against Ukraine continued on Saturday, with the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reporting that 10 Iranian-made Shahed drones had been shot down across the Kherson, Khmelnytskyi, and Mykolaiv regions.

On Friday, Moscow’s forces launched more than 100 missiles and dozens of drones across Ukraine, an onslaught described by one air force official as the biggest aerial barrage of the war. The attack damaged a maternity hospital, apartment blocks, and schools, with rescuers continuing to search through the rubble.

“Russian attack affected a total of 159 people. As of now, unfortunately, there are 39 fatalities … Those injured have received all the necessary assistance,” he added.

January 1 will be declared a day of mourning in Kyiv, where at least 16 people were killed, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The United Nations Security Council criticised Russia for carrying out its massive air assault at a meeting on Friday. But Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said Moscow had “exclusively only targeted military infrastructure in Ukraine”.

Fighting along the front line is largely bogged down by winter weather after Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive failed to make a significant breakthrough along the roughly 1,000km (620-mile) line of contact.
And in a related bit:
Poland’s defence forces said on Friday that a Russian missile had briefly entered its airspace, however, Russian sources said Warsaw had not given the Kremlin evidence of an airspace violation.

Considering the resource limitations, I hope Ukraine continues to respond with wisdom for maximum military effect and not emotionally with attacks on civilian targets that have no battlefield relevance. It’s not only moral high ground, it’s best use of what they have.

It might seem to us that attacks on civilian targets would demoralize the population and weaken the will to continue the conflict, but they are more likely to be demoralized by their body bags and injured soldiers sent home from the battlefield. WWII demonstrated that attacks on civilians (British,German or Russian), even the most extreme, only harden the population. So the effect is contrary to Ukraines best interests.

Wow! someone should inform residents of Wożuczyn-Cukrownia that the missile hit near their village. They know nothing about it.

My sister went into Asda in Carlisle before Christmas and all the veggies were bagged up and being handed out to customers for free, it was a case of take what you want as a thank you. She got herself a bag full of carrots and declined the others.

back on subject.

It’s us darstardly Brits again - warms the cockles of my heart….

BREAKING:

Russia is calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with the Ukrainian attacks against Belgorod.

They say "Britain is behind the terrorist attack in Belgorod, which together with the U.S. incited Kyiv to commit these shameful acts”

PARTISAN GIRLS STRIKE AGAIN IN CRIMEA - 18 Russian soldiers dead >>

Two female partisans who previously managed to poison a large group of russian soldiers have struck again.

The girls brought a squad of russian soldiers pies stuffed with cabbage and potatoes, and said the food was a gift from their grannies, to thank the russians for their service. They also brought them beer.

Despite the fact that these girls have struck before in recent memory, the soldiers still took the food and shared it with their unit.

Eighteen russian soldiers are dead, and fourteen are hospitalized and struggling for life….

Despite the fact that these girls have now twice been successful, I trust they will not try this again. They're tending to a single modus operandi, and that's best avoided.

They sound more like porky pies they gave the Russians than cabbage and potatoes.

Lonewolf, as said by others, yes we do appreciate your input.including some of your analysis. However I do think that you underestimate that great British pastime known as irony and, of course, taking the Pi$$ out of the other forces. And of course, Nutty IS right, the Royal Navy is a shadow of it's former self and we, the UK citizenry, are reaping the decisions sewn in the 1991 politicians mind. Who needs lots of ships? who needs lots of tanks? who needs lots of aeroplanes. Well we all do now. As the son of a P.O. Stoker RN who served in the arctic, the med and the Far East for six years, and the brother of a sapper in the RE caught up in the Mau Mau insurrection, I served in The RAF as a junior NCO and consider myself a cold war warrior, and had many a banter with my father and brother, BUT we never slated each other, only our services. It's a great British pastime. Oh, and the only time I REALLY appreciated the Andrew was when I was invited on board HMS Gurkha whilst on a short detachment to Gib to help in anti air warfare with an AEW aircraft (either Florence or Ermintrude, I can't remember which) in support . Those buggers on that Mess deck all drew their daily tot and plied me with copious amounts of Carlsberg IIRC. So, basically, play the ball, not the man. By the way,In light of my visit to Gurkha, do you think the U.S Marines really enjoy serving on one of His Majesties ships?

The Russians are relentlessly keeping up the attacks while Ukraine is struggling with resupply.
