Ukrainain losses are being reported as an estimated 30,000 dead.

A Ukrainian civic group said it has confirmed the deaths of nearly 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers since Russia's February 2022 invasion by using open sources, and puts the total toll at more than 30,000.

Kyiv treats its losses as a state secret and officials say disclosing the figure could harm its war effort. A report in August by the New York Times, citing anonymous U.S. officials, put the Ukrainian death toll at close to 70,000.

Writing in the Ukrainian journal Tyzhden, historian Yaroslav Tynchenko and volunteer Herman Shapovalenko said Shapovalenko's Book of Memory project had confirmed 24,500 combat and non-combat deaths using open sources.

The real figure was likely higher, they added, noting that many of the 15,000 troops listed as missing were likely dead.

Reuters could not independently verify the figures.

"Obviously, the 24,500 names are not the final number of dead (deceased), but by our assessment it is no less than 70%," the authors wrote. "That is, the real number of dead (deceased) in combat and non-combat situations is more than 30,000 people."

Applying a 1:3 ratio, the authors also estimated that up to 100,000 troops had been wounded.

A spokesman for Ukraine's defence ministry told Reuters he could not comment on the figures.

The Book of Memory project, which has tracked Ukraine's war dead since Russia's first invasion in 2014, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tynchenko, in a message through his employer, the National Military History Museum of Ukraine, declined to comment on the article.

The article, published late on Tuesday, comes as Ukraine increasingly faces the prospect of fighting a long war with Russia.

Ukraine's top general wrote in the Economist earlier this month that the conflict was becoming static and attritional. A Ukrainian counteroffensive launched in June has made only incremental gains in the south and east.

The authors of the Tyzhden article said it was crucial to balance various estimates reported in Western media, which they described as given to "manipulation", with verifiable data.

"Should we talk about this topic in Ukraine during the war? We believe so, but only in terms of concrete data and open and trustworthy sources," they wrote.

Russia has also not disclosed the number of its war dead.

I invited a few dozen Marines to my wedding. Four of them were sword bearers. (And all of them were pilots). <======= Aviation content!

Vladimir Sviridov, former commander of the 6th Army of the Russian Air Force and Air Defense Forces, and his wife were found dead.

The body of the 68-year-old general was found in his house in the village of Andzhiyevsky, Stavropol Krai. The body of his 72-year-old wife Tatyana was found next to him.

According to Russian Telegram channels, the spouses died about a week ago.

Representatives of the gas service took tests in the house and found no exceeding of the permissible concentration of harmful substances.

The cause of Vladimir and Tatyana Sviridov's death is unknown. Only one thing is clear - senior military officials and those close to the Kremlin continue to die mysteriously in Russia.

Marina Yankina, head of the financial department at Russian ministry of defense, was found dead.

She fell out of a window…..

Evidence is being gathered of Russians pre-planning to starve Ukraine. Yet another possible war crime case against Putin.

That helicopter near miss I posted the film of, someone has captured the single frame off it…. The SU-25 in the film does a little hop over it.

Need to be a bit closer than that to do serious damage with wake turbulence at 1g. Must have been a bit of a ring-squeezing moment though.

Nikolai Patrushev, Russian Federation Security Council Secretary, has instructed Russian governors to prepare for the transition to a "mobilization economy".

The heads of regions and the leadership of federal authorities have been ordered to "ensure the formation of mobilization plans for the economy" and to take this task under "personal control".

It looks like soon Russians will be working around the clock and for free.…

There must be some decent Russians somewhere. But they allow Putin and his henchmen send thousands of men into a death trap, believe incredible lies about Ukraine and Russia, and seem to gladly rape and pillage defenseless civilians whenever they can. If they had any decency at all, they would be up in arms against their criminal leadership and put an end to all this.

Russian casualties climbing steeply. Yet another day wtih 1000+ troops, the 10k unit threshold is exceeded on APC's and other vehicles.
With current rate Russian losses will exceed 400k in February 2024 and 500k in June. And no one bats an eye in Russia.

rephrasing an old adage,
"one death is a tragedy, 1140 deaths is Kremlin policy".

Probably because most of Russia do not know the true extent.
