Belarus begins military drills near border with Poland and Lithuania

TALLINN, Estonia — Belarus began military exercises Monday near its border with Poland and Lithuania, amid tension already heightened with the two NATO members over Russia-linked Wagner mercenaries moving to Belarus after their short-lived mutiny in Russia.

Both Poland and Lithuania have increased border security since thousands of Wagner fighters arrived in Russian-allied Belarus under a deal that ended their armed rebellion in late June and allowed them and their leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, to avoid criminal charges.

Leaders of the two NATO nations have said they are braced for provocations from Moscow and Minsk in a sensitive area where both countries border Belarus as well as the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad….

The Belarusian Defence Ministry said the drills that began Monday are based on experiences from “the special military operation” — the term Russia uses for its war in Ukraine. It said that includes the “use of drones as well as the close interaction of tank and motorized rifle units with units of other branches of the armed forces.”

The wargames were taking place in the Grodno region of Belarus, near the Suwalki Gap — a sparsely populated stretch of land running 96 kilometers (60 miles) along the Polish-Lithuanian border…..

Military analysts in the West have long viewed the Suwalki Gap as a potential flashpoint area in any confrontation between Russia and NATO. They worry that Russia might try to seize the gap and cut off the three Baltic states from Poland and other NATO nations.

Belarus’ military has said it is actively using Russian mercenaries to train its troops, and the exercises began as more Wagner fighters reportedly arrived in the country. According to Belaruski Hajun, an activist group that tracks troop movements in Belarus, mercenaries arrive in small groups daily…..

Intriguing read.

Why dozens of Russian [defence] enterprises are bankrupt, or heading that way

MOSCOW — Russia’s economy has not shrunk to the point some Western governments and experts predicted following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Indeed, since Feb. 24, 2022, the more than 11,000 added restrictions aimed at pressuring the Russian government have “not delivered as much hell as originally expected,” according to a report released a year later by the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

But despite the Kremlin’s ability to defy “apocalyptical forecasts,” as the think tank put it, and the government’s growing defense budget, dozens of Russian defense plants are undergoing bankruptcy proceedings or have claims for bankruptcy recognition. Some have received contracts to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and are still operating, while others have turned to selling their property…

The best lesson they could learn from the "special military operation" is to stay well away from other countries' territories.

NOPE.
They are probably not many civilian workers, they are more likely to be Russian Contractors - they are definitely fair game.
Also take enough of them and their equipment out and the others are less likely to want to come and help with the reconstruction.
This is a War and in the West some people still haven't woken up to the fact...until its a full blown war.

Re the Russians in the West, absolutely kick out those and their families on the sanctions list and seize their assets.
If they can't buy property in the UK or ski in Courchevel, then it is much much better for everyone.

This is an I.Q. test?

Scenario: You watch a large overly aggressive bully get a bloody nose, his wallet shredded, and sand poured into his underwear that are then pulled over his head in a superwedgie. You, a 90 lb weakling with a critical crowd then:
A. Stay at home lesson leaned well;
B. Side with the bully and try and bite the other parties toe nails for effect in support of the super wedged bully;
C. Have another bottle of Vodka, that cures everything;
D. Join in on the super wedging of the bully who has been eying your puff pastry (pirogi);
E. Do Nothing.
(Bonus 1/2 Mark for knowing your own name)

Not expecting Poland or Lithuania or NATO to not respond forcefully to any uppityness by the last dick-taster dictator of Europe, but then maybe he really is a mastermind as a farmer... He has managed to marginalise the sovereignty of Belarus and to ensure that his tomb will forever more have the faint smell of ammonia from those that relieve their frustration on his interred remains. The only thing that is unknown is the timing, not the disposition nor the stench.
By the same logic Russia claims Ukraine by, perhaps Kaliningrad needs a new flag too. Personally, I think Russia is perfect for Russians, the actions of Western Europe in permission of the continued presence of Russians that ewvidently prefer the wonders of Lord Farquard's kingdom should be invited to return there post haste. The Baltic states once more seem to be leading the way with placing action in the place of indecision.

Russia for Russia, let them out when they stop misbehaving.

And no pudding!

There seems to be a lot of posts finding their way here instead of the Jet Blast thread.
Mods have got a hard job but it would be better if we policed it ourselves.
Thankyou for those who continue to post relevant information about the conflict.

Well, words fail me..

"Russian society considers women at war to be just prostitutes," she said. "And that is really sad."
"Everything was stopped, destroyed, or broken down," she said of the military vehicles she saw. "When I was in the Nizhny Novgorod region, I saw enormous transport trains of equipment -- tanks, armored personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery…. We were shipped to Ukraine on such a train and waited forever while it was unloaded. But when we got to the front, there was almost nothing to fight a war with. What happened to it? I think it was sold to the Ukrainians, and I'm not the only one."
