They could declare an exclusion in the Black Sea and do an air burst as a demonstration of capability and intent, unless there is some other empty space available.

100 atmospheric and 921 underground. There is an interesting museum about it all in Las Vegas run by test site veterans.
However, your point is what? Are you trying to draw a parallel?

Except theses were actual weapons tests, not demonstrations of intent for the attention of an adversary they were actively fighting.

Randomly detonating a nuke over some place with no military value just to prove a point makes zero sense, especially if it prompts a NATO intervention and/or the opprobrium of the world at large.

Not without breaching the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Alright, I know Russia probably wouldn't worry about breaching another treaty, but it's all ammunition to eventually use against them.

I'm sure that would go down well with Turkey/Greece/Bulgaria/Romania/Georgia/and probably Iran/Azerbaijan (not to mention those Russians planning a vacation in Sochi).

We know they have the capability, but what would this actually demonstrate, other than they're sh*t scared of actually using one in anger, for fear of the consequences?

unless there is some other empty space available
Hmm, the biggest country on Earth looking for some space for a weapons test...

Didn't seem to be an issue for the nearly 500 above surface atom/nuclear tests the USSR carried out between 1949 and 1989, and those were a lot closer to China than Ukraine is.

It is not just a question of finding any old space, to have an impact it has to be proximate to the conflict area if it is to be considered a warning shot. Air bursts are vey low fallout so being downwind should not be an issue though the EMP might be. While other nations might not agree, the Russians see the Black Sea as their private pond.

Ukrainian forces destroyed 44 Russian tanks yesterday, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

31 of these tanks were destroyed on the Kherson/Mykolayiv battlefront, according to Operational Command "South" of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Follow up to report of Russian retreat…

The Russian invaders are retreating chaotically and abandoning the north of Kherson region. Ukrainian defenders are chasing them to Beryslav.

Davydiv Brid, Velyka Oleksandrivka, Starosillya and other settlements have been liberated.

Not really a parallel, more a nod to the fact that during the cold War, weapons 'tests' were common on both sides. Did they really need to test so many? Surely some were just making sure the enemy knew you were ready, IE. A demonstration.

The Russian command will try to establish a defensive line covering the Nova Kakhovka dam. That means they try to fortify Berislavka and Kozatske.
