Ouch
Ouch indeed. Wonder if any of the steel will have to be replaced.

Minor fire in a stairwell. Few coats of paint and all will be back to normal.

Reports of an RAF officer scurrying away from the scene moments before have been denied by dockyard officials...

A "stairwell"? Do they mean a companionway?

Is that a Navy term for somewhere they hold hands when going up and down the stairs?

From the original article linked to:

It is understood a piece of welding equipment caught fire on board the UK's first Queen Elizabeth class carrier.
.....
Fife Constabulary said no-one was injured in the fire, which was traced to an extractor fan.
.....
Rosyth dockyard operator Babcock confirmed employees were now back working as normal and said the fire had had "no consequences" on operations.

So, a fan brought in to remove gasses released by welding operations* overheats and catches fire, and suddenly the carrier build is in trouble?

* its not even a part of the ship.

Blimey,

Defence cutbacks so severe the navy cannot afford the requisite number of warm bodies.

Wood deck, wood bulkheads, rope everywhere, lots of old paint.

Vs all-steel decks & bulkheads, with minimal paint and no fittings or furniture.

Hardly comparable.

Stoke up HMS Belfast - Torque

How many Harriers can she take? - TBM

Observing that a Harrier landed on board HMS BLAKE as far back as 1971, remove BELFAST's Y-turret, a quick conversion a la BLAKE and TIGER and you'd be nearly there! But the propulsion system would be another matter ....

Incidentally, agree 500N - if every small fire that occurred on board a ship during building was reported there wouldn't be room in the papers for anything else.

Jack

PS And, oh yes, I believe that it was a light blue Harrier .....

except Victory is being rebuilt as well. A maritime nation without a fleet. Am surprised the MoD hasn't put the fleet out to a PFI, you know, just like that well negotiated air tanker one
