Yes...ANOTHER UAS posting

Fox 4, obviously a man (or woman) who has yet to sample the particular delights of Shrewsbury! Liberty's on a Wednesday night and curry houses that supply naan breads that can be used as sleeping bags if you can't get a taxi home(if you are really unlucky and need one!!). Just can't think that Kings Lynn is as good (and I have been there)and who would want to go to a place where they make the tea, do the shredding and only dream about flying whilst others get to do it. Come to think of it, that's my job now!! My advice is go to a place where you can get as much flying as possible, and if you can, go to somewhere exotic on rates.

MG - What makes you think Im in Kings Lynn or have ever been near the place apart form blasting thru the low level corridoor to the north.. .I have been to Shrewsbury which in all fairness is alright but its still a wokka place!
I say again "go somewhere pointy" or like the poster above, go to LOO or Valley and get some flying in.
*Not aimed at slating the helo guys, some of my best mates fly `em*. .

Gaff off that Rotary stuff! Get to a base where you can fly faster than you can in your Grob. For flights, Linton or Valley would be great; loads of guys get back seats in the Viffing thing aswell.. .MG - sure Shrewsbury is a grrrreat night out but student life revolves around lager and curry (or so it should do) so I'd go and try to experience what life is like in the FJ world if that's what you're striving for.

If you want to get flying and maybe travel a bit then try Brize or Lyneham. Fast jet bases sound great but back seat rides are not that easy to get especially if you are one of 6 to turn up for a visit. Go tanking and you will get a good close up look of pointy things though. Certainly don't bother with a Tornado base as you will almost certainly not fly. A helo base would also get you flying.
If you are unsure as to whether you want to join the RAF then I suggest a "real" station rather than a training base as you will get a better feel for the life after IOT and training. Please note that I have nothing against the training bases, its just not the real world.
Also, don't think that going to a truckie base will hurt your chances of going fast jet, SVAs are there to broarden you service knowledge.

PS Not BVR, just re-read your post. Don't forget that most helicopters go faster than the Grob

Why not try to go Purple early ?. .I'm sure Yeovilton or Culdrose would accept you, especially if you are interested in rotary stuff (plus Hawk and SHAR affils maybe .........).

Scottish Steve-seriously, if you want lots of flying, got to 100Sqn at Leeming, or to the Hawks down at Culdrose (I think). Lots of spare seats and cool flying. As far as I'm aware, the multi's boys have stopped taking holding Officers/UAS types on jollies due to cost, so you may well find yourself tied to the UK. Anyway, enjoy-hope to see you on the other side of the fence some day to hear your exciting UAS stories.......

Fox-4, why don't you tell him about your "great" nation and how you will rise again. As for my stories, they're not really for polite company...

I was at Kinloss last year, and it was a good laugh. We got flying quite a bit. A friend was at Lossie, and the only flying he got was when he came to Kinloss for the day. Try Brize or Lyneham for serious round the world jaunts. A friend was at Brize and ended up in Canada. Nice

They didn't do any SVAs to DHFS, Valley or Linton last year that I know of cos of the huge backlog in the training system - they're just too busy to take UAS chaps.
Don't bother with a Tornado base either - 14 at Lossie was OK but not really anything Tornado related after the first day. Get some sim trips, but certainly not the real thing!!. .If I were you, try Akrotiri (best one ever apparently!), Odiham or Lyneham if you wany trips and a decent mess life.
Oh yeah, and avoid Cranditz, I'm sure you'll see enough of that place soon!

I don't think there would be a problem applying to the Hawk guys at RNAS Culdrose even though you're UAS. Couple of URNU guys were there last July getting hands-on jolleys for a week. I believe the hawks are civvy reg. flown by ex-service guys. . .Looked like bloody good fun pretending to be a missile heading for a frigate :-). .Maybe someone could suggest who the contact there would be, personally don't remember. As far as I could see the hawk guys were highly obliging and the URNU lads were having alotta fun ;-)

SS. .Why don't you just phone the relevant base's Ops or CRO and ask what their policy is for flying UAS. Yes sometimes there are financial restrictions, but it is not always the case, I think it may depend on how much is left in the relevant HOTAC budget.

Budgie
The hawks are still owned by the MOD (military serials and all) but are operated by Civvies, cant for the life of me remember who though.
