Anyone who saw the (briefy posted) YOutube video of the destruction of the aircraft would understand why it was 'hushed up'.

And that was only for a few days - the knowledge that it wa sthe result of 'enemy' action was public knowledge pretty son after.

'Public' knowledge amongst others in various sections of the Forces, perhaps, but is was not generally public knowledge in the usual sense of the term.
