Avro Vulcan XM603 being reduced to spares
very sad news but alas it is true, shes currently being stripped of all usable spares for the "active" Vulcans and once this process is complete she'll face the scrapman, officially the reason for her scrapping is that she's no longer structurally sound.
it seems we are going to lose 2 Vulcans in 1 year

BAE Systems will need to clear the site in preparation for the "brown field" planning permission for a much needed housing estate. The Factory must be profitable after the Nimrod 3 contract ends.
The 603 Club lads did a good job looking after her and she could have been made airworthy. Hangar space always seemed to be at a premium, though.

2 in one year is terrible, 391 was understandable, but 603 is one of the better examples left.
no longer structurally sound my @rse.
Hope the 558/426/655 boys manage to hevily spares recover the old girl. Would be great if the scrapman turned up to find her gone completely save for a U/S nosewheel steering motor, in a pool of used hyd oil........

Pardon my ignorance but where was this Vulcan located?
Nimrod 3? Wasn't that the AEW Mark?

A credit to all who worked on her. Their skill and enthusiasm was boundless.

Jeez, I didn't realise it was the one at Woodford. I got to look round her around two years ago (and a couple of MRA4's). At that time she looked in pretty good knick, and was apparently still safe for high-speed runway runs... what a waste.
