Can anyone help me out or has anyone had experience with the following: I took FRI 2 £50 000 back in Nov 03 but have subsequently PVR'd thus not fulfilling the 5 year requirement. I received £30 000 after tax back in 2003 but Innsworth are leading me to believe that I must repay the gross amount; however I have a letter from the Inland Revenue given to me by a fellow RAF mate that states it is the RAF's responsibilty to claim back the tax. Anyone been in the same situation and can point me in a good direction to take - getting nowhere with SHQ, JPA etc!!!

Had a similar incident myself when I PVRd. I understand the tax man is correct, but by the time it all gets sorted out, you will 'out' and therefore its up to you to sort.
On a separate note, I fought NOT to give my FRI back and won! I had to do some serious threatening, but it was worth it. Give it a go

Same Question
Looking at leaving 4 years into FRI 1. I understand I will pay this back and have asked question as to how and when. With the drop in flying pay it would be nice to pay back on leaving with gratuity to help out.Hopefully they don't want it on acceptance of PVR. Wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't spent it. Doh! Never mind. Her new boobs are worth it.

any chance you can send me your top tips please.
Swinging Monkey.
I tried to fight the FRI repayment but lost - Its complex but I think I have served the required number of years - they don't. What tack did you use? private message OK for reply.
Many thanks chaps.

You guys might be interested in this:
JSP 754 (Pay and Charges) was updated to dii Version 4 on 12 Oct.
It now has an amended paragraph on repayment of FRIs.
If you accept an FRI payemnt for a return of service committment, then in order to receive the payment (net of Tax and NICs), you will be asked to sign an undertaking that if you later elect to PVR and exit before you have given the required return of service, you will pay back the Gross value of the FRI in asingle lump sum payment. It will then be up to you to claim the stoppages back from HMRC. You will be required to make the lump sum payment before your application to PVR will be accepted.
There will be some limited opportunities for applications for waiver of these rules to be accepted in very special circumstances (it doesn't say what these are), but such cases will have to be staffed individually by the JPAC EC.
The moral is: FRIs are offered for a reason, to tempt you in to a serious committment. If you are in any doubt as to your willingness to maintain that committment then think very carefully; you may have to find an awful lot of spare cash in a hurry to buy yourself out of it.

Well, that's the sort of offer you can refuse which would probably make even Don Corleone blush with embarrassment....
I cannot imagine who, other than someone who is a navigator and/or serial BSA brat-breeder, would ever bother to contemplate the utterly poisoned chalice of FRI.
There will come a time when pilot retention becomes unsustainable; the RAF will then need to take urgent action. My feeling is that, by then, it will be too late.......

I thought that you, as an ex-squabbling bleeder, would have realised that FRI 2 is not a "poisoned chalice" if you're planning to stay until your 22yr/44yr old point as an SO2?
The £30k was very welcome to Mrs Jabachjabicz for me to have a bit more fun (which is starting to be a rare event these days - but it still can be done) until I get too old and start to smell of wee.
Now where is my freshen up flannel...
