Exclamation Application Forms

Tip from the inside boys!

Just been going through application forms with my boss and we've binned 50% for not filling out the forms correctly!

The Department for Transport ask for a 5 year employment/ education/unemployment history and this was reflected in the form. The form also clearly asked that exact dates were used and there were no gaps of more than two weeks in their 5 year history (BAA Security requirements).

The bosses point of view is that if you can't read and fill out the form correctly you probably can't read and understand the Operations Manual!

Come on guy's do you really want a job?

What! In this weather! - I'm sure your boss will be thrilled when you start getting forms back detailing people's 3 week chill outs in Thailand, taken when one job ends and before the next starts.

Well mr/ms weather, just cross checking my list of up-to-date applications against airlines headquartered in Scotland, and there's only one that asks for those details on the application-form stage ... and yes I have accounted for every single day of my life on your application form ... and yes, I would crawl across broken glass for a job with bmi Regional.

Mmmmm ... Embraers ... niiice.

Pick me! Pick me!

No, I doubt he will be thrilled. But what he will do is not consign that application form to the bin because the applicant has not done what it said on the form..................

Employers aren't judging how you spent each day, they just don't want the hassle of going through the selection procedure, spending time, money and effort, only to find that even if they offered the job the applicant would be no use to them as they could not get the required security clearance.

Luke, many airlines will not have this on their application forms, but will require the specifics at some stage. I suspect the vast majority of us have nothing to hide and are perfectly acceptable so there is little chance of us falling at that hurdle when it arises. Interesting to hear the 'obvious' comments about not being able to follow instructions on an application form. The best one that springs to mind is 'please fill out this application in back ink and capital letters'.............amazing how some people just jump right in with the hand written blue biro scrawl...............!

Also of interest is the DFT requirement for a Criminal Records Check for airside ID issue and renewal. Anyone with something to hide may find their employment terminated.........................

As I have said, probably not very clearly, every airline will ask for these details, they are now a requirement of the DFT, it just varies at the moment as to when they ask you to fill in the form, some at application stage, some later. It makes sense for anyone contemplating applying for a pilot job to have drawn all these personal details together on their PC so they can transcribe it immediately when asked and don't have to sit on an application for days whilst trying to find the proof of when they were on the rock'n'roll three years ago! Do keep a copy of anything you send as well, because if they want further clarification and you mix up a day or two you will at least delay your employability...................

Agree totally with you to keep a record. A friend called trying to work out dates of a holiday 5 years ago. I have tried to work all two week periods when I have done different things and believe I would need 6 sheets.
