SAS Pilots for Ryanair ?

Afternoon all !

I heard that the recruitment of ryanair 1st officer in berlin training center was put on hold, due to an agreement between SAS and Ryanair.

Does anybody know something ?

It seems that the people training now, will finish and be considered for employment with Ryanair, but for the other with a type rating scheduled in the next weeks and months, nothing is sure...

SAS was about to lay off some 200 pilots and I think ryanair is going to employ them...

Does anybody have more ?

A french pilot, based in Berlin
Cheers!

Learjet35,

I dont think you are quite right there. Ryanair have stopped training at Berlin for their cadets because the school has not been able to gather the relevant approvals in order to train for an irish airline.

This is a separate issue and has nothing to do with an agreement between ryanair and sas airlines.

If ryanair do interview any of the redundant pilots from sas they will obviously only be looking at the 73 type rated ones. Now, I believe sas's fleet is around 140-150 aircraft and about a third of that being 73's. Its anyones guess 1) when, and 2) how many 737 pilots will be made redundant, and how many ryan will want to employ.

As for any other redundant sas pilots flying different types; I doubt if these experienced guys will be willing to pay for a 737 rating to fly for ryan.

Please correct me if wrong.

Hi Folks !

MorningGlory, thanks for this info, but where did you hear that ? I would really like to know.

My infos are coming from a friend of mine who is actually training with this Flight School in Berlin (FSB - at SXF airport training in the Lufthansa training center). He is one of the first guy doing this 737 training for ryanair here in Berlin. It seems that he will fly the supervision with Ryanair ... But another friend of ours was about to start the 737 TR in July, and officialy he wont be anymore under that "ryanair scheme". And according to these friends, it's because Ryanair is going to hire a lot of SAS copilots ...

On my side, I went to see the people at the flying school, and it seems that they are a standard JAR-TRTO with TRIs from Air Berlin, Germania, etc ... Everything nice and serious, like germans can sometimes do ! So It seems again to me that they have everything to train for 737 TRs ... Do you need to have more to train pilots for an irish airline ? I dont get it ... maybe ryanair is just not happy with them, its possible.

Is anybody training at another training center for Ryanair ? any infos ?

Bons vols !

As I said LJ35, most of sas's pilots are rated on other types and and I therefore think that these guys are very unlikely to want to pay for their own 73 rating with any airline, not just ryan.

As for the rated guys who will be made redundant no one knows how many there will be or when they'll be on the market. From your comments I should think this will be fairly soon, but again who knows how many?

With regard to stopping the trto training in Berlin, my opinion is based on the fact that ryan are still using other trto's to my knowledge, and haven't stopped training with those ones. Also the fact that on the ryan website, it states that the school in berlin is not approved. I believe that ryan not only requires JAA approval but Irish IAA approval too, and I think its the latter that berlin don't have.

Again, this is my opinion and I don't work etc for any of the above so I stand to be corrected.

MorningGlory,

In that case I think, you are bringing us a good news !

It looks like you were right the adress of the trto in Berlin disappeared today from the ryanair website. I will check with my friends to see what they have heard ...

A little question is Ireland using already JAR-FCL + OPS already ?

cheers !

by the way I found this article dated March 2003:
********************************************

There is currently a large exodus of SAS pilots to Ryanair and other airlines said Ryanair's communications director.

Ryanair is experiencing much interest from pilots currently flying for SAS.

Half of the job interviews in recent weeks have been with pilots from SAS. The same is true for applications that have yet to be processed, he added.

There are 10-20 interviews a week, the daily reported.

Today there are currently 24 ex-SAS pilots flying for Ryanair, Fitzsimmons added.

Because of cost cutbacks, SAS has reduced capacity, mothballed aircraft, fired 300 pilots and still has a surfeit of pilots, the newspaper added.

Hello everybody,

I do not work for either, but I have several friends who work both at Ryanair and SAS. The union at SAS have made arrangement for all pilot that are made reddundant that they will obtain a SAS paid type rating to fullfill any vacant positions that can be found in Europe and elsewhere. Most of my friends used to be Dash 8 first officers with SAS, but now flies B737 at several different companies, including Ryanair, around the world. The SAS pilots union are actively working in securing new jobs for all their members as their current main task. I hope this will shed some light on the subject.

I do hope that Ryanair, or any other airline contemplating using SAS pilots remembers that not all the Scandinavian countries are in the EU so it may be that a number of those pilots do not have the right to work within the EU.

Just a small point, but quite important given the number of unemployed pilots within the EU.

Is there a possibility that some of those guys are being contracted out to Ryanair. I've been told, second hand information admitedly, that Aer Lingus also have some of their pilots on contracts with Ryanair during the Winter.
