Age?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but at age 42 is there any likelihood of employment if I go for an CPL/ATPL. I hold a PPL, but I am still fascinated by the thought of being paid to fly.

Any thoughts?

Of course anything is possible. However, the harsh reality is at that age the odds are really stacked against you if you want to fly airliners. If I were you I wouldn't bother, save yourself a lot of money and a shed load of hassle!

Chances are very unlikely I would suggest if you are looking at airlines. The more promising alternatives could be instructing or air taxi work.

As Ray Ban said though, anythings possible,

Do it

I have worked for the airline industry for many years, and yes the opportunity are less at 42 than those in the mid 20's or even 30's. But there are jobsout there flying for airlines. I am a engineer typed on many aircraft and took the decision to train for an F/ATPL at 40. You have to be totally committed to the training, there are a thousand reason to stop, but only that one reason to keep going. Go for it old boy, just don't let the road to that F/ATPL get you down, as it will try to at every turn.
Good luck!!!

Try the modular route and see how it goes.

Instructing to build up the hours, and you never know your luck.

Right place at the right time with a fATPL/MCC - can help having the right friends as well to put in a good word.

Do not expect to be as quick to acquire the necessary skills as
the young boys and girls - you will get there though; just takes a bit longer.

Don't pack in the day job just yet.

Maxflyer,

Age is certainly going to make it more difficult but not impossible.

I got my first airline job in my mid forties and post 9/11,
but I was very fortunate.

Suggest you go down the modular route.

If you still need to build hours before you can begin the Modular CPL then study for the ATPL's at the same time. Get your CPL and an Instructor Rating. Instruct part-time so you can keep your existing job and earn a descent living. When you have something like 1000 hours do the IR.

If you are determined, there is a good chance you will make it.

Best of luck
