Question What are my options??

G'day fellow Ppruners!

I was wondering if the more informed of you out there would be able to help me with some advice. To help you with some background information, this is me:

- Aussie national with work rights, moving to Manchester this November;
- Aged 29 with VERY supportive/ understanding wife & no kids;
- Frozen JAA APTL completed at PAT in June 2001, will be doing an MCC Course of some description when we get to the UK;
- Total time approx. 300 hours;
- Have wanted to fly an Airliner for a living for as long as I can remember.

Just recently, I've discovered that a relative of mine passed away (R.I.P) and left me with a sizeable inheritance from her estate. This (in a financial sense) has opened up more doors as to what I do with my Flying career from here. Given the current condition of the industry (specifically in the UK), I am interested in the possibility of self funding a B737 NG Type Rating. Financial circumstances now dictate that I can spend 17-18,000 Pounds without compromising ourselves.

I'm referring in particular to Ryanair. I've looked on their website and noted that it is possible to get a contract as a B737 FO with them- on the proviso that I pay for the Type Rating. There are four approved TRTO's nominated to conduct the training from what I can see.

Has anyone else out there had any experience of this scheme? For example, are applications only accepted once/ twice a year or do Ryanair have enough demand that this scheme is run year round? Has anyone followed this route and NOT been offered a contract with Ryanair? I would be grateful to hear any CONSTRUCTIVE comments/ advice from anyone.

Also, does CTC still have a tie- up with EasyJet. When I was in the UK in 2001 doing my IR, CTC had a scheme running where it was possible to be assessed by CTC and given LOFT training- then (subject to the Airlines' demand for crews) provided with 6 months' worth of line experience. I am aware that CTC are doing the ab- initio scheme at the moment and sending people off to New Zealand, I'm really interested in what CTC have to offer people with Frozen ATPL's without a Type Rating.

Failing these, I will also look at the possibility of an ATR Type Rating.

Looking forward to your advice and opinions,
Thanks in advance,
Gearupandorrf.

(PS: To keep this thread on track, could those of you who have problems with self funded type ratings or hold "johnny foreigner" sentiments please keep these to yourselves?- It's all been done before).

Commiserations and congratulations on your fortunes sofar mate.

Bereavement is painful, but it looks like you have a good shot at that RHS job so many of us would kill for! (Don't worry about the 'Johnny Foreigner' remarks, they're just jealous)

There was a scheme with CTC-EasyJet/Thomas Cook that kicked off earlier this year, with dates for training set throughout this and year and 2004. I hold CAA PPL/IMC, Class 1 med, 25 yrs old, good health, blahh... but no degree. (So I didn't even get past the initial screening)

I take it you've tried CTC's website?

Other than that, I can only offer the best of British luck.
