IR Renewals

Without refering me to the CAA website, can anybody tell me the period of time that may elapse between taking original Instrument Rating Test and renewing, before the whole thing has to be done again!! That is to say, I have decided that the cost of renewing far outweighs the benefit at present, so having not used the rating in the year that I've had it I have let it go un renewed. There must be a point, though, where the CAA dictate a complete new test rather than an IRR flight. I greatly appreciate your help.
