qatar airways interview info

All the information about the interview I got via e-mail. Qatary arranges travel on qatary flights to and from doha only. For f/o´s the give you a eco ticket upgradable to business and for captains a business ticket upgradable to first.
The interview takes 2 days. Only the hotel room will be paid by Qatary. But be aware if you don’t make the first day you have to clear your room immediately. On the first day there is a general overview about the company and their expansion plan. Qatary offers every month until aug 2005 a familiarization course. The tell you about living in doha school, housing etc.

There after you have a pencil test about general aeronautical questions (what is a touch role, what is the limiting factor for vne) and some questions about your aircraft (vne, gear extension and retraction speed etc) . so you have not to be a rocket scientist to answer this question. Anyway I guess they want to find out if you can write and know what a airplane is.
In the afternoon the applicants have a personal interview with two of the qatary guys. The interview is done one by one separately. They ask you about your pilot training, you career until now, why do you want to join qatary and some features of your aircraft (which speed protection, what is alpha floor etc )

On the second day you have a 2 hour simulator session. there is a short briefing with the flight instructor prior the session, where the tell you the program they want to fly (circuit with cross wind, receted take off, engine fail after v1 more or less a standard program). Generally you fly according your procedures, however qatary stick to airbus procedures.

So that’s the way the two days go.

And what do the have to offer???

Generally the package is not as good as emirates for instance.
The pay for Capt. is 26.400 ryals and for f/o´s 18900 ryals, where one us dollar equals 3,68 ryals .
There is no extra housing, transportation or school allowance. This is all included in the above salary. You get a medical insurance for you and your family but without dental and optical costs.
Life insurance 250.000 qatary ryals
Loss of licence 100.000 USD
Away from base allowance 10 qatary ryals per hour
Leave is 45 days per annum consumable after 6 months with the company
Regarding sick leave you get the first 14 days the full pay, the second 14 days 50% of your pay and there after nothing.
There is no retirement fund but you get an extra pay on retirement, which is 3 weeks pay for each year with the company.

So these are the hard facts. Following some personal thoughts.

Currently the company is far away from the size of emirates. But this could change in the future because the have ordered airplanes in the amount of 30 aircrafts or so. Doha international airport is too small for their expansion plan. a new airport is planed on the sea, which will probably built after the Asian games which will held in Qatar 2006 (long time to go). Regarding upgrading the change the rules some months ago. Now have to be with the company at least for 3 years to get promoted as a captain. I spoke to a copilot who is with the company for 2-½ year and he was not happy. He told me that the management is unprofessional and the duty rosters are very unstable and there are now signs of cooperation between roistering and pilots. Further he told me that they let you know that you get good pay (which actually isn’t that good) , do your work and shut up. (modern slavery he said). This is the right time to mention the exit visa. The first year with the company you have to ask for a exit visa each time you want to leave the country. You get the permission from your fleet chief. Afters the first year you can apply for a multiple exit visa, which is valid for one year. An unusual thing for people, which are used to free travel.

There are a lot of air liberty guys in doha. Some former gulf air pilots and pilots from the Arabic region ( tunisair, air maroc) and some asian guys (Philippines , sri lanken) and of course some European.

Doha for living is ok. It looks like dubai some 5 to 8 years ago, but they are building very fast. You have a lot of shopping malls (and of course a city centre) . there are some international schools and childcare organisations (English, French but no german). Doha is more or less western orientated but not as far as dubai. So you better don’t take a female flight attendant home after your trip if you are male. There are some extra parking lots for women where males are not allowed. But I guess these relicts will disappear with the development of the city.
There are a lot of activities for your free time (sailing, horse riding, arts, music schools, surfing etc) . as Qatar is a half island there are a lot of beaches.

For me Qatar airways is not an option but a think is better to have a look by your own and judge thereafter. I think if the want the pilots the need in the next year the have to change the conditions to the better and maybe this is the right time to join to be in the front of the following hype.

I hope a gave you some useful information. The hard facts are according my best knowledge and the personal thought are my impression I got when a was in doha and can differ significant from others.
So have a look by your own and good luck for those who join the company.
