Flying Instructors & Examiners A place for instructors to communicate with one another because some of them get a bit tired of the attitude that instructing is the lowest form of aviation, as seems to prevail on some of the other forums!

What's This Mean Then??????

Today's METAR for Fairford.

Anyone care to offer a translation of that string in the middle to the end.

FAIRFORD EGVA 070655Z AUTO 00000KT 9000 BR OVC035 11/11 A3020 RMK AO2 RAB0557E0606DZB0606E0608 SLP229 P0000 T01080106

Anything after the RMK is practically only used by met people, not by pilots.

AO2
Signifies the type of equipment used.

RAB0557E0606DZB0606E0608
Rain began 0557 ended 0606 Drizzle began 0606 ended 0608

SLP229
Surface level pressure 1022.9 hPa

P0000
Trace of precip observed but not enough to measure

T01080106
Temperature +10.8 celcius, dewpoint +10.6 celcius

There was another thread in the Private Flying forum a few days ago talking about anything the US folks put in the RMK section: http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=294527

Someone pointed to this great webpage, containing all you ever wanted to know about what the US folks put after the RMK section: http://www.met.tamu.edu/class/METAR/quick-metar.html

POOOO means the weather's sh*t !!
Actually, the weather is quite good for flying. Some recent rain, but now visibility of 9 kilometers and clouds at 3500 feet. I'd go!

Good job but...

SLP229 Surface level pressure 1022.9 hPa
Sea level pressure. It's the altimeter setting (QNH) adjusted to sea level using the actual temperature.

You're still a wizard in my books, BP.

Cheers for the info - much appreciated.
