I am shortly going to have to renew my instructors ticket and have been looking at where to do it. I will probably need to do a seminar - any recommendations, I looked at Ontrack and their seminar price seemed fair, but if you wanted a flight test as well it was about £200 extra just for the test and almost as much again for the aircraft if you were to use theirs, this seems a little steep, what seems to be the going rate for a renewal flight test?

The seminar is pretty much what the rest of the industry charges - although we had a couple of sit-down lunches at Cambridge with ETA rather than buffets. I don't think we had quite such long hours and we were mercifully spared having a trick-cyclist going on about the teaching and learning process. We had some very informative lectures - not just being told how to prepare a lesson! Although the 'interactive' part of the Cambridge seminar did not give sufficient time for all syndicate members to participate - some shrinking violets couldn't be bothered to contribute - I think that too much emphasis is put on this generally and it isn't a particularly effective use of the time available. So regarding seminars, look up who provides them, the cost and what the content is before you book - because the content is not the same from each provider.
Regarding the renewal flight cost, don't forget that it's almost a whole day experience now as you have to do some ground instructing and suffer an oral as well. There will be the FIE's fee - plus as OnTrack don't actually own any aircraft they'd have to hire one for you to do the test in if you chose that option! But £635-£247=£388 for the FIE's fee, aircraft hire and VAT.....

Foxmoth - do you mean renew or revalidate? There's a big difference now. If your FI rating is still current then you need to revalidate by doing either the Seminar or the check ride as long as you meet the experience requirements - 100 hrs instruction in the last 3 yrs including 30 in the last 12 (of which 10 teaching IF if you have no applied IF restriction on your instructor rating).
If your rating is out-of-date or you don't meet the experience bit then you need to do a seminar plus a test flight. The standard rate for an FIE for the test flight is £170 plus the aircraft and any personal expenses (ie travel from miles away). The test flight will probably last around 1 hr 30 mins and then there's the ground work (including a 30 min lecture these days).
Hope that helps.

Unfortunately it looks like I am going to fall slightly short on the hours side, didn't do a lot in 1999/2000, probably only 30 hrs instructional until this last year, doing better now, but as I only really do it in my spare time will not have the 100.
